Rules for a Happy First Grade
Dear Parents,
I have developed a classroom discipline plan to help students make good
decisions about their behavior. In doing this, the children are afforded the
opportunity to learn in a positive, nurturing classroom environment. Your
child deserves the most positive educational climate possible for his/her
growth. My goal is to ensure a safe and positive learning environment for all
students.
Our classroom rules:
1. Follow directions.
2. Be safe...keep hands, feet and other objects to yourself.
3. Be kind to other children and adults in the classroom.
4. Work time is quiet time.
5. Raise your hand when you need share something with the class.
6. Use a soft voice in the classroom, save your big voice for outside.
We have a traffic light poster in our classroom. Each student has a pocket
with a green, yellow, and red card in it. Each child starts the day with
their card on green. The colors signify the following:
Green is good: You are making good choices by following our class rules.
Yellow: Oops....You get a warning. Spend some time spent away from the class
to think about how you can do better.
Red: Uh, oh. You will need to spend more time away from the class thinking
about making good choices. A note/phone call home will tell your parents
about your behavior.
Individual rewards for making good choices:
~If the children remain on the "green light", they receive a sticker at the
end of the day. They put their stickers on their take home folders, and
usually end up with quite a sticker collection!
~We have a "Cheer" box. When a child does something kind, exceptionally good
work, we cheer for him/her. Some of our cheers include: firecracker, a
standing o, "Kiss your brain", and a penguin clap. Ask your child to
demonstrate these things for you.
Group rewards for making good choices about behavior:
We have a classroom "cube jar." As a class, the children earn a designated
number of cubes when everyone cooperates and makes good choices. This
encourages cooperation and working together as a team. When the cube jar is
full, the children are rewarded with free time, a movie, extra recess, no
homework night, a special treat, etc.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions about this policy.
