A Typical Day

A day in the life of a first grader is Room A8.

When your child first gets to school, he or she is expected to wait quietly in the hallway until 8:30. During this time, they may read a book brought
from home if they'd like.
At 8:30 We come into the room and attendance is taken. If a student arrives after 8:30, they need to stop in the office to sign in & get a tardy
pass. Lunch money is collected and sent to lunchroom. Any notes and homework assignments are to be handed in at this time.

Students are to work quietly at their desks on their morning work. We work on handwriting. We practice our sounds and we practice reading
words using our strategies, and we practice our math skills. We also work on sight word sentence writing and we work on picture writing. We
also work on journal writing. Each student has a Reading Response Journal, a Writer's Notebook, & a Math Journal.

Children are usually assigned 3 of these activities to complete. During this time, I try to see a reading group and children go on the computer.

When morning work is complete, after about 40 minutes, we move to the back carpet to do the calendar.
After that, we have a direct sound lesson which then becomes our homework in our Sound Journal.

We then move into our Reading lesson. The reading instruction may consist of learning reading strategies and working on comprehension skills.
We work on previewing, predicting, retelling, sequencing, and connections to our life (just to name a few) After our lesson, children go back to
their seats to complete their independent work which is an extension from our Reading lesson. We may do another Journal question in our
Reading Response Journals.
During this time, I meet with more groups, and when childen compete their assignments, they may go to centers and on the computer.

Around 10:30 we usually have snack. Sometimes our little 'smart apples' want to have a working snack.

We usually begin our Math lesson after snack. Then we move into Writer's Workshop.
We may get a new poem for our Poem Binder, or we'll play a game called "Making & Breaking Words.

We go to a specialist, we have lunch, then we have silent reading.
We find time for Science, Social Studies, and finally Recess.

Our schedule changes daily however we try to keep to the same routine.
When the children have free time or sometimes during silent reading I allow them to work on unfinished assignments in their work folder.

We are very busy, and the children in Room A8 are learning to be responsible, hard-working children who use their time wisely.
