Here is a quick snap shot of the things we will be learning about during the year.
Language Arts: There is a big emphasis on literacy skills in first grade. We take a balanced approach to reading which means that children will
learn to read using a variety of methods. They will read in small groups, they will read chorally, they will read in a whole group,they will listen to
read alouds, they will read in partners, and they will do a lot of writing (just to mention a few)
Phonemic Awareness: rhyming / alliteration/ syllables/ blending/segmentation
Reading Strategies: ways to approach decoding & understanding text
Reading Comprehension & retelling
Phonics: vowels, blends, diagraphs, & much more
Parts of Speech: grammar, spelling, High Frequency sight words,
Writing stories & much more.
