How Can You Help At Home

Read, read, read!  Reading with your child is one of the most important things you can do at home.   Even if you read a few minutes a night, it is reinforcing skills that we do everyday in school.  Encourage them to find words they recognize.  Have them make predictions about what they think might happen.  Picking books that rhyme are a great way to have your child participate in the reading.   They will pick up on the rhyme and be able to finish the rhyme.  Dr. Seuss’ books are great for this.

Have them practice writing their letters and numbers.  We focus on one letter a week and one number a week.  Find out from your child what letter or number we are on and ask them to show you how to write it.

Play rhyming games with them.  While you are in the car or getting ready for bed you can play a rhyming game.  For example, have you ever seen a bear sitting on a (chair) .  The children really seem to enjoy this and it will help them in school.

Encourage them to write.  Even if they are making scribbles or aren’t spelling the words correctly still encourage them to write.  You may want to buy a special pencil or a pad and make it a special activity.

These are just some suggestions.  If you would like more or any specific things you can do at home to help your child, please let me know and I will be more than happy to help you.
