Make Your Day: Make Your Day is a schoolwide program to help
children take responsibility for their actions. We teach the kindergarten
children that when they do not follow an expectation they get a chance to
think it over and try again. It takes a lot of practice and there are no
time outs or punishments. The children also learn to decide how many points
they have earned for a given period of time based on the expectations they
have followed the best they can. The highest number of points they can earn
is 10. I find it to be a very successful program.
Here are some subjects we will be learning about:
*Math: We will learn about number writing, graphing, patterns,
sorting, numbers between, place value and estimating.
*Sight words: The children will learn to memorize these words:like,
see, it, come, up, we, can, go, can, look, at, here, is, me, my, am, an,and
to, this, in, on.
*Writing: The children will learn to hear sounds in words. We will clap
words into their parts to hear syllables such as /pocket/ /book/. We will
count how many sounds or phonemes we hear in a word like /c/ /a/ /t/.
*Reading: We will focus on story elements: setting, characters,
problem and solution. Try discussing these with your child when
reading a library book. We will work on sequencing: first, next,
last. We will be doing guided reading picking books that are appropriate for
each child. The children learn reading strategies such as, picture clues and
word chunks.
*Writer's Workshop: The children will learn how to become a writer through
units of study: storytelling, letters, lists, labeling, small moments,
author study and all about books.
Important events each day:
*Morning: Reading Workshop, daily
*Morning: Writer's Workshop, Mon., Wed., Thurs.
*Lunch:11:40-12:10.
*After rest we listen to a story on tape and then recess. Recess occurs on
rainy days with gross motor movement in the classroom.
*Afternoon choice time: 1 hour
*Math centers: 45 minutes - 1 hour
Fire Drills: Fire drills occur twice a month. The children will need to
follow me, stay quiet, and remain calm. They should not run or cover their
ears when they hear the alarm. Fire drills only last a few minutes. We are
not able to get coats on chilly days.
Conferences: If you would like to have a conference please do not
hesitate to ask. Also email me whenever you have a question or
concern.
