This month we are working on studying poetry in both reader's and writer's workshop. We have learned how to observe objects with a poet's eye, and are practicing writing our own poems about things we care about. We are finding out that the layout of poems is important in the way we read or recite poems. We are also discovering that if the layout doesn't work, the poem may not be sharing its message or have a sing song effect or rhythm. In math we are working on time and measurement. We are practicing hour, half-hour, and quarter hour. We are also learning how to measure using both non-standard and standard units of measurement. In Science we have been studying our "adopted" tree and have observed some changes. We have also measured the circumference of our tree and sketched the changes. We finished our study of soil and earthworms, and have moved into studying our caterpillars. We are excited waiting for the metamorphosis that will soon take place and are learning about the life cycle of the butterfly as well as the process the caterpillar goes through to become a butterfly. Ask your child to share with you what these words mean when tallking about caterpillars and butterflies: molting, proboscis, thorax, abdomen, silk button, spiracles, true legs, and prolegs.
