Dear Simon Lake School Families,
Due
to an increase in our enrollment and for our students’ safety and
privacy, we can no longer have family members join students for lunch.
We are unable to accommodate the number of parents, guardians,
grandparents and younger siblings who have been coming to school to
have lunch with students. We need the tables to accommodate our
students and to provide a safer environment. Thank you for your
understanding.
Sincerely,
Donald J. Busca

September 25, 2008
Dear Simon Lake Elementary School Parents and Guardians,
Enclosed you will find the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) reports for Simon Lake Elementary School and the Milford School District. These reports are based on the results of the spring 2008 Connecticut Mastery Test and will serve as benchmarks for the progress our school and district make over the coming years.
The top section of the attached report identifies Connecticut’s targets for the percent of students proficient in mathematics (82%) and reading (79%). If our school or district did not meet these levels, we would be identified as not making Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP). If our school or district does not make AYP goals for two years, we have to prepare a school improvement plan for the Connecticut Department of Education. There is also an AYP goal of 95% of students taking the state assessment. In NCLB terms, it is known as the Participation Rate.
The report outlines the state goals and our school results. Simon Lake Elementary School has exceeded state goals in reading and mathematics. In mathematics, 93.4% of our students were proficient and in reading, 80.7% of our students were proficient. In addition, our students made AYP in writing and participation. The entire school community should be proud of the accomplishments of our Simon Lake School students.
NCLB also describes student results by subgroups of the student population as well as the whole school. Each subgroup must have 40 students in it to have results reported by the subgroup. In most cases, the subgroup analysis does not apply to our school. However, we have been identified in need of improvement and did not make AYP in reading in the Economically Disadvantaged subgroup. We had 77.6 % of the students in this subgroup reach the proficient level which is 1.4% less than the state goal of 79%. We have several initiatives and programs to address these needs in addition to our school improvement plan. These include Reading Recovery, Leveled Literacy, and the Reading for Success program.
The second report is the Milford School District report. The format is the same as our school report. Overall, students in Milford scored well above state goals. In mathematics, 90.8% of the students were proficient and in reading, 84.6% were proficient. Overall the district made AYP in writing and participation.
The district has been identified in need of improvement and did not make AYP in reading and mathematics in the Students with Disabilities subgroup. In addition, the district has been identified in need of improvement and did not make AYP in reading in the Black, Hispanic, English Language Learners, and Economically Disadvantaged subgroups. Goals for the district and the subgroups are identical. The district has established a number of initiatives and programs to address these needs that include a district academic improvement plan, the reading for success program, special education services, and several reading programs including My Sidewalks, Fundations, SRA, Good Habits and Great Readers. Teachers and administrators are working together to address these needs.
At Simon Lake Elementary School, our school improvement plan focuses on reading, writing and mathematics. We are proud of our students, staff and all those who support our efforts. The results reflect the dedication to learning of the entire Simon Lake School community. We will continue to work diligently to maintain and improve our students’ academic achievement. We know we can count on your continued support.
If you have any questions regarding these reports, please feel free to contact me.
Respectfully,
Donald J. Busca
Principal
