Reading at Home

Students in grades 3-5 should spend at least 20 minutes per night reading in
an independent book. This is a book in which the student reads fluently and
easily. This will allow the child to be able to have "brain power" left over
to concentrate on thinking more deeply about their reading. Good readers
become even better readers when they read, read, and read!

Although they might tell you that they are too "old" to be read to, don't
listen to them. Choosing a book to read to your child that they are
interested in, yet it is too difficult for them to read, is the perfect way to
entice your child to read even more. Your fluent reading is a great model for
them and the vocabulary that they are exposed to is invaluable. So pick up a
book today, something you will both enjoy, and settle in for some special time
with your child.
