I earned my bachelors degree in chemistry from the University of Florida in
1998. After five years of industry work, I returned to school, completing my
teaching certification coursework at Southern Connecticut State University in
2004. I stayed at Southern, completing my MS in Environmental Education in
May of 2009. I grew up in the Philadelphia suburbs, lived four years in
Gainesville, FL, lived three years in New York City and I have lived in
various towns in southern Connecticut. My wife and I recently bought a house
in Shelton, where we live with our daughter, who was born in 2007.
I have been involved in education for several years. After moving to
Connecticut, I booked speakers at colleges. In 2003, I changed course,
working at Gateway Community College as a math, science and technology
tutor. I also worked for Mad Science, bringing hands-on science activities
to kids all over Fairfield and New Haven counties. I began my public school
teaching career at West Haven High School where I taught chemistry, biology
and freshman general science.
Science is a particular way of looking at the world. Chemistry is a branch
of science that uses ideas of matter and energy to explain how the physical
world works. To truly understand chemistry means that one grasps theoretical
concepts (how things work on paper) and uses laboratory investigations to
test these concepts.
As chemistry learners, students will use facts and ideas as tools, to
explain, to prove, to predict. Our world is evolving in many ways, and
society desperately needs inquisitive minds exploring and understanding these
changes.
