Mr. Miller earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from the
University of Florida in 1998. He completed his teaching certification
coursework at Southern Connecticut State University, which is also where he
is pursuing a Masters of Science in Environmental Education. Mr. Miller has
lived in the Philadelphia suburbs; Gainesville, Florida; New York City; and
in various towns in southern Connecticut. He and his wife Elise, to whom he
was married in March 2006, had their first child in October 2007.
Mr. Miller has been involved in education for several years. After moving
to Connecticut, he booked college speakers. He changed course, working at
Gateway Community College as a math, science, and technology tutor. He also
worked for Mad Science, bringing hands-on science activities to kids all
over Fairfield and New Haven Counties. Mr. Miller began his teaching career
at West Haven High School where he taught chemistry, biology, and freshman
general science.
Science is a particular way of looking at the world. Chemistry is a branch
of science that uses ideas of matter and energy to explain how the physical
world works. To truly understand chemistry means that one grasps
theoretical concepts (how things work on paper) and uses laboratory
investigations to support these concepts.
As chemistry learners, students will use facts and ideas as tools, to
explain, to prove, to predict. Our world is evolving in many ways, and
society desperately needs inquisitive minds exploring and understanding
theses changes.
