Requirement: By the end of the course, students must complete 15 hours of community service.
Unit 1 - Getting to Know You
Students learn various ice breaking activities that help students learn to get to know other people and form bonds with those they must work with. It shows students how much more you can accomplish when you know people versus a group of strangers.
Unit 2 - Leadership
Students will look at various leadership styles and different leaders in History. We do a library scavenger hunt where students are given a fact about a historical leader and they must figure out who the leader is. Students will also choose a leader they look up to and create a game for the class to guess the leader they have chosen. We look at leadership behaviors and view examples of some leadership styles.
Unit 3 - Family
Students will look at themselves and their family relationships. Students and parents will fill out surveys to determine how well they know each other. They will have to answer questions about their relationships and will hopefully realize what an impact they have on the family and the family has on them.
Unit 4 - Discrimination
Students will learn about various forms of discrimination (racial, age, gender, social class, religious etc). Students will make assumptions based on pictures. They will bring in an article about discrimination actually occuring in the US.
Unit 5 - Group Process
Students will work in teams to learn how to compromise and work together. Some tasks will be difficult causing them to learn to work together. This unit is very activity based and students have a lot of fun completing the tasks.
Overall, students must learn to look at themselves and how they fit into society. They realize how their actions and opinions impact others. It is wonderful to watch them grow and become more confident over time.
