PURPLE FYI

Grade: Your grade for the first quarter of the academic year will be a
combination of the total points you earn on the tests and content quizzes
administered, a homework grade and a notebook grade. The relative weights of
these components will be as follows:
•	Tests and Quizzes:	60%
•	Homework Assessments:	20%
•	Notebook Assessments:	20%
The relative weights are subject to change for future quarters (with
appropriate communication), but will not change once a quarter has begun.

Tests and Content Quizzes: Tests will be administered at the end of each
unit, while content quizzes will be administered intermittently throughout a
unit. These quizzes and the grade impact are designed to motivate you to
stay current in your work and to seek help if needed.

Homework Assessments:	The purpose of homework is to practice and refine the
concepts learned during class. Homework will be assigned during each class
period.

Homework will be graded on a random basis. The homework grade will be based
on completeness, level of difficulty, and the level of your effort. Homework
will be graded on a sliding scale from 0 to 30. To get full credit, you will
need to show your work and circle all final answers.

Since homework is a vital part of learning mathematics, late assignments will
be penalized a minimum of 50%. All late assignments MUST INCLUDE: the problem
written out completely (even for handouts), all work shown and final answer
circled. Put your name and original assignment date on the paper and hand it
to me. There will be NO LATE WORK ACCEPTED AFTER 5 SCHOOL DAYS.

Homework quizzes will be administered on a random basis and will be part of
the homework weighting. These quizzes are open notebook and the purpose is
meant to measure how complete, organized and up-to-date your homework
assignments have been. Homework quizzes count anywhere from 5 to 60 points.

Chapter Study Guides: Each day, as part of your homework, you will need to
update your Chapter Study Guide (a 3 x 5 inch index card: front & back), ONE
FOR EACH CHAPTER. Review your notes from class each night. Put important
information that you learned during class that will help you do your
homework. From time to time, you will be graded for keeping this study guide
updated.

Notebook Assessments: The purpose of a notebook is to help you organize the
content of this course. It is believed that this organization will help
promote success throughout the year. Notebooks may also be collected and
graded at the end of each chapter for completeness and neatness.

Notebook quizzes will be administered on a random basis and will be part of
the notebook weighting. These quizzes are open notebook and the purpose is
meant to measure how complete, organized and up-to-date your notebook has
been. Notebook quizzes count anywhere from 5 to 60 points.

Exams: A comprehensive Midyear and Final Exam will be administered in
accordance with school policy. The midyear exam will cover all material
presented in the first two quarters, while the final exam will cover material
presented in the last two quarters. A significant portion of the final
annual grade will be weighted for these exams.

Extra Credit: There are no extra credit assignments in my class. You may
earn extra credit on certain days through classroom participation, for doing
the work assigned in the beginning of the class and for keeping your study
guide up to date.

Make-Up Work: The absent student is responsible for all work missed. This
includes those absent for school related activities.
a)	Get classroom notes from a classmate and update your notebook.
b)	Complete homework, put your NAME and ORIGINAL ASSIGNMENT date on the
paper and hand it to me within 2 school days.
c)	Make-ups exams and content quizzes for absent students will be given
at the teacher’s discretion (usually the day the student returns). There
will be no retakes (and the student will get a zero) if they have not
completed the retake within 5 school days of original test/quiz date.

Class Cuts/Tardiness: Each class cut will result in an automatic zero in any
graded work for that day as well as a 5-point deduction off the marking
period average. When the second bell rings, you are expected to be in your
desk, with your homework and 3 x 5 card out for grading. If you are not at
your desk when I am grading your homework, you will need to show me your work
after the lesson is over. If you were unexcused tardy, you will be penalized
50% of your score.
