Study 4 Math Tests?

How to Study for a Math Test

Parents and students have asked, “How does one study for a math test?”  While it is different than studying for a science or social studies test, and it does not work for everyone, this method has worked best for most of the successful math students that use it.

The method is a combination of daily work and steps to do in the days before the test is given.  In order to do well in math, you can’t fall behind, you have to be persistent in your studies, and you have to practice a little each day, as you would for any sport or hobby that you are involved in.

DAILY CHECKLIST…Items to do each day after math class:

q       Review the notes you took in class.  Highlight the important definitions, formulas and procedures with a yellow highlighter. Review the example problems that were given in class.

q       Develop and update daily a study guide of the important math facts you highlighted.  Write it out on a separate piece of paper or several index cards.

q       With your study guide by your side, do all the homework problems assigned.  After attempting the odd numbered problems, look in the back of the book to see how you did.

q       Use the answers in the back of the book to try and solve the problems you couldn’t get the first time around.  If you still can’t solve a problem, mark it down. Either put a checkmark on the back whiteboard or ask a classmate how to solve.

q       After doing all of the above, go for extra help when offered if you are having a problem with a particular topic.

q       Students should spend at least 30 minutes a day after class on math.

EXAM CHECKLIST…Items to do in the days before the exam:

q       Review your study guide.  Read it over 3 or 4 times.

q       Memorize important facts you will need for the exam.

q       Go over all of your assigned homework problems that you did for the unit, paying particular attention to the problems that gave you the most trouble.

q       Go over the Practice Test given out during the Classroom Review

Students should spend at least 60 minutes extra preparing for an exam.
