May 1, 2013

Greetings from Mrs.Miller’s Class!

 Dear Parents,

Hello! Happy May…it is hard tobelieve we are now into the final stretch!! We have reviewed our first and last names, both recognizing and spellingthem. Now we continue to focus on ouraddresses and introduce our phone numbers as our helper tags in circle.

Thisweek we begin a new monthly theme revolving around “Insects and Animals,” atheme I am sure your children will love! We will begin this theme by discussing farm animals, and then mother andbaby animals on the farm. Next we will talk about zoo animals, learning allabout their characteristics, baby names, etc. Towards the mid to the end of themonth we move to the many different kinds of insects and then to ocean animals, and this topic will help to transition into our June themes. All of these topics provide opportunities forthe review of many concepts such as: patterning; one to one correspondence; number estimation; healthy/nothealthy; shapes and textures; recognizing/reviewing the letters in our firstand last names; sequencing the event and parts of a story; estimation; andreviewing animal characteristics.

We will pattern zoo and ocean animals; matchmother animals to baby animals; sequence parts in a story; make shape animals;practice prepositions; graph types of animals; sort seashells by size andweight; along with many other activities. Among the many bug books we will read areThe Very Hungry CaterpillarandThe Very Busy Spider.  Wewill make many types of our own caterpillars, including one containing healthyfoods we find; patterning pom-poms; and finding the letters in our names toconstruct caterpillars. We will play asorting game with bugs and then examine them under a magnifying glass. We will also play “bug charade” in circle. Wewill learn the names of many different types of insects, and then sort anddifferentiate between those that fly, crawl, and walk and also how they look.

Our letter/sounds for this month will be /C/,/K/, /M/, /S/, and /Z/. We will discuss all of these lettersthroughout the month spending as much time as necessary on each letter. The week of Monday, May 6th we will talkabout the letter /Z/.Please have your child bring an item that thatstarts with /Z/ for sharing on Wednesday. The following week we will discuss the letters/S/ and then the letter/M/.
