Greetings and Happy Holidays from Mrs. Miller’s Class!
Hello! Happy December!! I hope everyone enjoyed their Thanksgiving holiday and short holiday break. Now… onto to that crazy holiday season!!
For the month of December the main theme is “Sharing with Family.” Some of the related topics we will discuss are: reviewing the animals that come out during the day and the night, and linking this to animals that hibernate; how animals find food in the winter; classifying different sizes of trees; and looking at the characteristics of animals. We will also talk about indoor activities such as baking with our families, and using this to relate to concepts of measurement. The Gingerbread Man and other books about his “relatives” will be read to reinforce these concepts. The month will be culminated with a discussion of being home for the holidays and family togetherness. Much like “Thanksgiving,” we will review who the family members are that we spend the holidays with.
One special activity that is occurring this month is our fourth annual “Hibernation Day!” To emphasize this concept, on Thursday, December 12th, all of the four year old classes will wear their pajamas to school, and bring their teddy bears to put to “sleep.” Before we do, though, we will classify them by size and color. At the end of the day we will put one of our bears (mine!) in a “cave” to hibernate and will not take it out until the spring!!
We will have our classroom Winter Holiday Centers on Thursday, December 19th at 10:45 for the a.m. class, and 2:15 for the p.m. class. All parents are invited to attend (please no siblings, if possible), and help out for the Holiday centers. We will also have a “book grab bag” that day, which will be the children’s presents to one another. ***Please send in a gift wrapped book (under $5.00) for our Holiday Party on December 19th. We will also wrap up the TECEC 2012 school year by having a “Sing-a-long” with Miss Gabby before school vacation. All of the classes will gather in the motor room and get a chance to sing some of their favorite songs by Miss Gabby all together.
This month we will begin discussing our letters!! Our letter/sounds for this month will be /P/, /F/, and /H/. We will discuss all of three of these letters throughout the month spending as much time as necessary on each letter. For sharing, though, we will have one focus letter of the week. For this week, please have your child bring in an item that begins with the letter /P/ as well as a magazine picture cutout of something that starts with this letter for our /P/ letter collage on Thursday. Sharing for Thursday, December 12th will be the letter /F/ and for Thursday, December 19th it will be the letter /H/.
Some important upcoming dates… Library this month will be on Monday, December 2nd and Monday, December 16th. If you are interested in volunteering to read on one of these days or any future library date, please get in touch with your Room Mother. School vacation week is the week of December 23rd through January 1st.
I hope everyone has a pleasant, fantastic, and happy month as well as celebrating a wonderful and joyous holiday season with their family! See you next year!!
