Before Reading
These skills are a prerequisite to reading:
Oral Language Skills:
Speak in complete sentences.
Engage and turn take in conversations.
Pronounce sounds and words appropriately.
Retell a short story or event in an organized, cohesive way.
Listening skills:
Attend to oral presentations.(Whole body listening for 15 minutes)
Follow oral directions (three step simple directions).
Recall details and sequence.
Associate the auditory with the visual.
Begin to develop Phonemic Awareness-
Visual discrimination:
Recognize gross similarities in objects, shapes, and forms (and eventually in letters)
Recognize differences, missing parts and reversals.
Motor skills:
Left to right eye progression.
Top to bottom eye progression.
Proper handling of book.
