Use of Media Center

The Media Center is open on school days from 8 a.m. to 2:45 p.m., Monday, Wednesday and Friday; and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Checkout Guidelines

Library materials are checked out for two-weeks. Reference materials may be used in the media center. Teachers, though, may checkout reference materials for classroom use.

Lost or Damaged Books

Students are responsible for books they sign out, but if they are lost or damaged beyond ordinary repair, they are charged purchase price. All efforts will be made to return money if a lost book is found and in good condition.

Students are asked not to repair books in any way, but to bring them back to the library for repair.

Media Center Sign-Up Calendar

Teachers are encouraged to schedule time in the media center for instruction and/or research. These visits should be based on cooperative planning with the media specialist. Information literacy skills may be introduced or reinforced by the media specialist. Upon request, the media specialist will construct bibliographies and or web-based resources to support classroom teaching. Teachers will be asked on a monthly basis about topics covered in their classroom to help support curriculum coordination.

Collection Organization

West Shore has an extensive collection of fiction, non-fiction, graphic novels, biographies, magazines/periodicals, newspapers, and reference materials. There are 12 computers in the media center to be used for research and the online card catalog.

Curriculum

The West Shore Media Center makes all efforts to support the educational curriculum of the school. Units of research are planned with the classroom teacher when possible and teachers are asked if support materials are needed in their classrooms.
