8TH GRADE FAMILY LIFE
The eighth grade Family Life program covers basic information on
human reproduction and sexually transmitted diseases including
HIV/AIDS. Classes are planned and taught by Mrs. Val Maroney,
Middlesex school nurse, and Mrs. Patricia Galvin, who holds dual
certification in health education and family and consumer sciences. Prior to
these classes, the topics of self-esteem and assertiveness are reviewed,
and students are repeatedly encouraged to think about the plans they
have for the future and how every behavior has a consequence.

Class discussion rules are strictly enforced, and no slang terms are
used.

Parents with questions about the program are encouraged to call Mrs. Maroney
or Mrs. Galvin.

7TH GRADE DRUG RESEARCH PROJECT
Seventh grade students are randomly assigned one of the following categories
of drugs to research:

Alcohol
Anabolic Steroids
Cocaine
Depressants
Hallucinogens
Inhalants
Marijuana
Narcotics/Opiates
Stimulants
Tobacco
Club Drugs
   Ecstasy
   Ketamine
   GHB
   Rohypnol
   Crystal Meth

Students are instructed to research ONLY on the websites listed
under "links" or print resources supplied in class and report to the class
the drugs included in the assigned category, what the drug looks
like, slang names (no one is ever going offer them
methylenedioxymethamphetamine!), how it is "promoted" (that might persuade
someone to use), true health effects, who uses and why, where it is made
(pharmaceutical lab, amateur lab, etc) whether it has a medical use, and its
legal status.

Prior to the research project general drug terms are defined and discussed.

PARENT RESOURCES
Mrs. Galvin is adding links for parents to her webpage. New for fall 08 are
sites related to CT's House Party Law and to the Connecticut Coalition to
Stop Underage Drinking. Please check back occasionally as she adds to the
list. If you learn of any sites that might be beneficial to other parents,
please advise her so she may share them!

POWERPOINT ON HOMEWORK PAGE: an overview of what is taught about drugs and
sexuality in Family Studies classes. First presented to MPA in March 2006,
but updated since then.

AS AWLAYS, PARENTS WITH QUESTIONS/CONCERNS ARE ENCOURAGED TO CALL MRS.
GALVIN.
