WINTER COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT LETTER
December 1, 2009
Dear Parents,

Our 4th grade Winter Break Celebration will be held on Thursday, Dec. 17th,
from 1:00 to 3:00. It is a tradition that the 4th grade students participate
in a community service project as part of that celebration. Students will
put together about 80 Ziploc bags full of hygiene items to be donated to
Thrive DC, the Dinner Program for Homeless Women. During the party, students
will decorate holiday cards to include in each bag, and then they will
assemble the bags.

We are asking each family to donate a few items for our project. All the
items will be pooled together for all the fourth graders to put into the
bags. We are making bags for 80 women, so we need each family to send in
four of each item, in order to have enough for all the bags. Please see the
list below to find out what to purchase, and send the items in with your
child as soon as you can.

Ms. Anderson’s: 4 toothbrushes
		     	4 travel-sized toothpastes
		     	4 8-oz water bottles

Ms. Carrier’s class: 4 travel-sized bottles of shampoo
		        	4 small sticks of deodorant
4 travel-sized bottles of hand lotion

Mrs. Young’s class: 4 bars of soap (all individually wrapped)
4 small (travel sized) bottles of hand sanitizer
4 pieces of special holiday candy (individually
wrapped in holiday style)

***Remember that all of the 9 items must fit into a large ziploc bag, so
make sure that you purchase TRAVEL size items.

Room parents will be contacting you to organize volunteers to help out with
the project. We appreciate your support with this project. Please let us
know if you have any questions or concerns.
Thank you,
Ms. Anderson

SECRET SNOWFLAKE LETTER
Dear Parents,
This is the season to incorporate a little of the “spirit of giving”
into our classroom. Therefore, the class will be participating in a “Secret
Snowflake” exchange the week before winter break.
Today, students are bringing home the name of the their "secret snowflake,"
a classmate for whom they are asked to bring in a card, a snack, and a book
for during the activity.

The schedule for the exchange of tokens is:

On Tuesday 12/15 Student should bring in a special card and sign it “Your
Secret Snowflake”.
On Wednesday, 12/16 Student should bring a special snack for their Secret
Snowflake.
On Thursday 12/17 Student should bring a wrapped book for their Secret
Snowflake.

****Each card, snack, and gift must be labeled
TO: NAME OF YOUR SECRET SNOWFLAKE and be signed
FROM: “Your Secret Snowflake”

Please spend no more than $5 on the book. The secret snowflake books will be
exchanged at the winter party on Dec. 17th. If you are looking for a quick
and easy way to buy a book, try Scholastic Book Clubs. Flyers for several
catalogs are being sent home along with this note. You can purchase your
books on-line and books will be delivered to school. The deadline for
ordering Scholastic is Sunday, December 6th, so we can get the books back in
time for the party. Here is the link for scholastic:

We would like for all students to participate. If there is any difficulty in
purchasing a book, I can order free books with bonus points, so just let me
know and we can make sure that every student gets a great book to read over
the winter break. For the snack- remember that we have nut allergies in our
classroom.

If you have any questions, drop me an email.
	Thanks,
	Laurie Young
