Counseling Overview

The school counselor is involved in counseling, consultation and 
coordination to achieve the goals and objectives of the school in helping 
students to reach their potential.  In that capacity, the school counselor 
works with the administration, teachers and students in a variety of ways.  
The school counselor works directly with students providing services 
individually, in groups and in classrooms on issues related to their 
adjustment in school,social and emotional well-being, classroom environment, 
educational needs, character development and community related activities.  

The counselor is a member of the administrative team and those duties 
include monitoring attendance, assisting with the development of 
disciplinary and behavioral plans.  The counselor coordinates the 
standardized testing and is responsible for ensuring that special 
populations are tested in appropriate settings.  The counselor coordinates 
the programs to help 5th grade students transition to Deal Middle School 
including Deal Buddy Day, placement tests for Deal and class presentations 
on issues related to leaving Janney and entering a middle school 
environment.  The counselor coordinates the Schools - to - Career activities 
in the school, including Career Day presentations.  Other duties 
include overseeing volunteer efforts in the school and other activities 
between the school and the community.   The counselor is also a resource for 
teachers and parents, providing support and information on dealing with 
difficult life situations or events that are negatively affecting a student 
or students and when needed, makes appropriate referrals to community
