Class Newsletter & Announcements

May 20, 2012

Dear Families,

We have successfully completed our Author Study Unit in reading and writing and we are now ready to move into book clubs! Students will learn how to become an active member of their book clubs through various roles we will be learning about this week including: awesome artist, word wonder, discussion director, super summarizer, clever connector, and passage picker. These jobs will serve as a catalyst to help launch student-lead discussions as well as help them build skills in articulating what they have learned about their book through the lens of their chosen role.

This week students will also get to participate in a fun and exciting exploration of the stars and planets with our very own traveling planetarium! The traveling planetarium, known as the Astrodome, is a small air-filled dome that students crawl into and explore the stars and planets. These images are projected onto the dome’s ceiling while the Astrodome host teaches the students about the constellations through story telling and songs. This exploration takes place on Tuesday, May 22nd, so be sure to ask your kiddos what they thought of the experience!

As you know, Parent-Teacher Conferences are coming up on Monday, May 21st, from 12:00pm until 7:00pm. At this time, all slots for conferencing are filled. If you were unable to sign up for a time to meet, please email me with alternative dates and times that you can come in and I will try my best to accommodate you.

During our last conference of the year we will discuss your child’s current progress in class, how they are developing in reading comprehension, fluency, spelling development, writing, and math. We will also discuss goals for your child to work on over the summer in preparation for fourth grade as well as any questions or concerns you may have about your child’s transition as a fourth grader. I look forward to seeing you soon and celebrating the many successes your children have made throughout the year!

Thank you for your continued support! If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at nichole.david@dc.gov. Also, don’t forget to visit our class website: http://teacherweb.com/DC/janney/3D/ to get our class and specials schedule, announcements, and important dates to remember!
