The 3rd advisory was very busy for Kindergarten, 3rd, and 4th graders. Kindergarteners had a great time exploring how things move. The most popular activity was the water challenge. Students used PVC tubing to take on the challenge of moving water from here to there. In the Food Chemistry Unit, 3rd grade students learned about the nutrients necessary for us to grow and be healthy. They learned which foods contain these nutrients through conducting various food tests. They tested for fats, sugars, starches, proteins, and citric acid. They then practiced reading food labels to find important information about the foods they are eating, when they dont have the opportunity to test the foods themselves. Ask them to help you plan a menu for a healthy meal! In their Human Body Unit the 4th graders explored the skeletal system. They learned about the bones in the body, and how bones, joints, and muscles work together to allow us move. They also compared the human skeleton to rodent skeletons that they found in owl pellets. Some groups were able to reconstruct an almost entirely complete vole skeleton to study. It has been a very active and stimulating year in the science lab, and I am looking forward to next year. As we wrap up for the school year, I need some assistance from you. We have had many animals to study in the lab over the course of the year. I need to send them home with students for the summer. I have 3 fish tanks with fish and crayfish and 3 tanks of anoles. Each need daily maintenance, but their care is not extensive. The fish/crayfish need to be fed daily and their filter changed every other week. The anoles need to have their water dishes filled and need to be sprayed with a mister at least 2 times a day. They need to have a day lamp in the day and a night lamp at night, and they need to be fed mealworms or crickets every other day. Any of the animals can last a long weekend without care, but if you will be away longer than a weekend, you will need to arrange for someone to care for them. I really appreciate the help with this. I enjoy watching the students interacting with and learning from living things and want to be able to keep them for next year. Also, as you may remember, we unpacked 20 years worth of science materials from every grade level in the 2 days before school started this year. I did not have any time to organize materials, and it was rough this year trying to find things I needed for lessons. I really need to finish unpacking and organizing science materials the last week of school this year so we can start next year out right. If you would be able to come in and help sort, consolidate, label and store materials, it would greatly benefit the science program. IF you can give a few hours at your convenience, please let me know. I have enjoyed working with your children this year, as their curiosity and enthusiasm are truly inspiring. Thank you also to all the parents for the support you have provided this year. You can contact me at lyoung88@yahoo.com if you are able to help out with organizing or caring for a science lab animal. Have an enjoyable, and discovery- filled summer vacation!
