2010- 2011
Dear Students and Parents/Guardians,
Welcome, Welcome, Welcome to another school year. My name is Mrs. Exum. I am looking forward to being your child’s Middle School Math Teacher this year. Relax, it is going to be a great year. We will keep a good open line of communication and work hard from each end and everything will turn out just fine.
I began teaching Math at Positive Outcomes during the 3rd Marking Period of the 2006/2007 school year, but have taught Middle School level grades since 2004. I love to teach and I am proud that I’ve made the decision to be a Teacher. I started out teaching a different subject, but I am glad that I am now teaching Math, because it is one of my favorite subjects besides Computers and English.
Outside of class, I attend workshops, classes and professional development meetings. I often visit educational websites and read educational information as well as work with the other Middle School Teachers and School Staff to help make your learning experience a great one. I do everything I possibly can to try and stay up to date in professional knowledge and Math related topics and challenges. I am willing to do the things necessary to help me effectively help your child/our student.
I am anticipating one of the greatest years in Math ever! We will not only study Math, but we will also make the connection as to how some of the Math skills will be useful to you in life. Look around in your everyday life, math is everywhere.
Whether you are…
· buying something or keeping up with your savings,
· counting your pocket money or trying to figure what percent you should save or spend,
· counting calendar days or hours or trying to figure what amount of time you have left for a project,
· using precise measurements for your fun-time recipe,
· measuring a space for building a new shelf or estimating the measurement of an item to see if it will fit in your room,
· rounding for easier math operations or multiplying to see how many items you’ll need per person for a big event,
· maybe you are simply calculating your score or trying to split something between you and a friend,
· you could even be figuring how many combinations of outfits you have using different variations of your shirts, pants, shoes and accessories,
· maybe you’re making a decision and need to know the probability of receiving your favorable outcome,
· or even thinking about designing the next great architectural building,
…you use math everyday in several ways.
All of the skills you will learn will be very useful, although the extent to how you use them will vary based on what you plan to do in life. Some things you will need to know for classroom quizzes and state test, but you may only see them again in specific areas. Other mathematical knowledge, like rounding, multiplying, math terminology, problem solving and data analysis will be used frequently regardless of your future. Thanks to the time we will spend teaching, learning and studying, you are expected to do great with what you learn for the time and settings in which you will need it.
This school year, you will not be over worked, but you will work hard to achieve your school, class and personal goals. Your ultimate goal should be to be promoted to the next grade on June 08, 2011 (without doubt or hesitation).
So get excited with me as we leap into a fun, knowledge packed year. Don’t worry about any unpleasant past years in Math, past Teachers, or past Schools, just focus on what you will do to make this fresh start have a Positive Outcome!
Thank you in advance for your support.
Best regards,
Mrs. Monique B. Exum
