I am thrilled to be working as the Spanish teacher at Bay Haven for the third
year.
While teaching has always been a passion of mine, I am a true believer that a
knowledge of a foreign language can help children in a multitude of ways.
I first became interested in learning Spanish when I was an undergrad at
Boston University and I traveled with a friend to Guatemala. With my friend
being fluent, I became completely dependent in order to get by. After this
experience, I was determined to learn Spanish and intended to do so through
immersion. I
decided to look for a teaching job abroad- and found myself fresh out of
college teaching at a small bilingual school in the remote mountain town of
Gracias, Honduras.
My first teaching experience was an extremely meaningful one- I taught
kindergraten and second grade at this school- at the time called Mundo
Infantil (Kid's World). It was in Honduras where I learned to speak and
understand Spanish through immersion. I also learned what it is like to be a
cultural outsider, a very valuable experience, as I came to understand the
rich cultural values
that the people of Gracias have.
After a wonderful year in Gracias, I moved to Sarasota, where I taught for
two years in Bradenton with many ESOL students. I enjoyed using Spanish on a
daily basis. Four years ago I joined the wonderful Bay Haven family and I am
excited at the opportunity to teach Spanish here through using a
conversational approach while also focusing on culture.
I now live in Sarasota with my husband Thadeu and our son, Benjamin. Our
family enjoys Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, the great outdoors, and travel.
My mission is for Bay Haven students to feel comfortable using
conversational Spanish while also understanding the importance of knowing a
second language. My mission is also to increase each child's awareness of the
diverse world we live in through understanding the many different customs and
traditions from different Spanish speaking countries- from how holidays are
celebrated to what an elementary school classroom looks like.
Most important, I want your child to have fun! We are lucky to be one
of the few elementery schools in Sarasota County to offer a foreign
language, and Spanish has been an important part of the magnet since the
beginning. I want students to enjoy Spanish as we learn at our own pace!
