What's Happening In ART?
April/May 2012

Projects change due to field trips, substitutes and grade level and individual teacher art project requests.
monalisa.jpg5th Grade-Students are finishing up enlarging, using a pencil grid, a picture of the Mona Lisa including an item from the 21st century. Students are learning how to mix tempera paint using tints and shades with the complimentary color pair, blue and orange. They also learned about Leonardo Da Vinci and why he was called a Renaissance man. We watched part of a video about his inventions and life.
NEXT-Cartooning Students will learn about Al Hirschfeld an American caricaturist
4thgrade_architecture.jpg4th Grade-Students are finishing up a lesson on architecture and bas relief. Focus is on the Elements of Art texture, shape, and color. They chose a famous building from reference materials and experimented using the Element of Art, texture and shape to create a surface using straws, toothpicks, felt, model magic and more. Students researched online and filled out a form for each individual building. They were painted and stamped with gold to look like granite.
NEXT-FORM Students will review Elements of Art, shape verses form, looking at Andy Warhols Campbells Soup Can art. Students will use a 2D cylinder to create a work of art.
3rd-graade-on_point.jpg3rd Grade- Students have just finished a one-point perspective drawing of a landscape focusing on the Elements of Art, line, shape and color. Students used perspective vocabulary and completed them using a choice of colored pencils or watercolor.
NEXT-Formal Balance in Masks Students will create a 2D mask using symmetry. Comparing a Senufo Face Mask with a Mask with Seal or Sea Otter Spirit student will see examples from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries to inspire them.
2ndgrade_pinchpots.JPG2nd Grade- Student just completed glazing a clay pinch pot adding an animal head of their choice. Focus is on the Element of Art form They are studying animals in their core classroom.
NEXT- Animal Drawing Students will transfer their animal drawing onto scratchart paper working with the Element of Art line as a visual texture.

NEXT-Self-Portrait comparing portraits done by John Singleton Copley and Winslow Homer students will create their own self-portrait.
kindergarten.JPGKindergarten- Students just finished glazing their clay pinch pots and an underwater ocean collage. They added additional details from their imagination.
NEXT-Buildings Students will create a 3D building out of paper, and draw a 2D picture to learn the difference. Element of Art focus is on form.
