CLASS NEWS
FIFTH GRADE NEWSLETTER

Bet Breira
May/June 2009

Albert Einstein said, “Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance
you must keep moving.” So our little fifth graders must keep moving right
into middle school. This month is full of exciting end-of-the-year
activities. We will have our Fifth Grade Graduation trip to Epcot and our
Fifth Grade Graduation and dinner. With all this excitement your might
wonder if any learning is actually going on. We will end our year reading
the novel The Watson’s Go to Birmingham-1963 and continue in math with a
combination of Data Analysis, Measurement, and number sense. In Science we
will begin the study of the Human Body, focusing on the skeletal, muscular
and nervous system. Also, we will end the school year learning about the
Civil Rights movement, the Cold War, and technology. I look forward in
seeing all of you in our end-of-the-year activities. And remember, keep on
pedaling!

STARS OF THE MONTH

Where I am From…
By: Ashley Scarry

I am from dishes,
From spoons and forks.
I am from the green grass that grows outside my door,
The homey feeling that it provides.
I am from the Royal Poinciana,
The Mango tree in my backyard
Whose long gone limbs I remember
As if they were my own.

I am from fishing and movie night,
From Uncle Stu and Mom.
I am from scraped knees and broken arms, And from trying new things no matter
how frighten.

I am from “Try hard!” and “Be careful!”
And “Be aware of Stranger Danger!”
I am from the Hamotzi.
I am from Miami and Jewish holidays,
French fries and latkes
From Dena Clara’s immigration.
Her change of name.
The opal heirloom bracelet,
On my wrist,
All the time.

Where I Am From…
By: Elijah Schantz

I am from bikes
From Kleenex and Oxyclean
I am from the back pool
And the smell of nature

I am from the roses
The banana trees whose long gone limbs I remember
As if they were my own.

I’m from brown hair and Hanukkah
From Uncle Jeff and Aunt Amy
I’m from loud music and late night parties
And from going out.

I’m from “double time” and “Shhhhh!”
And fall smacks
I’m from Rain, Rain, Go Away
I’m from South Miami Hospital and Judaism
Burgers and fries
From when my uncle broke his arm
He was just a kid
A picture of my dad when he was young,
On top of my special shelf.
