Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra wrote his book, Don Quixote, El Ingenioso 
Hidalgo de La Mancha, in the early 1600's.  It is, perhaps, the most famous 
piece of Spanish literature.

modern novel.

Man of La Mancha is partly based in Cervantes' propensity for getting himself 
into trouble with the Catholic church from time to time.  In order to 
understand what is going on in the movie, you need to have a basic 
understanding of the Spanish Inquisition.  Wikipedia isn't always completely 
correct, but it is readable and for our purposed here, a good basic source of 
information.
