Community
Service Guidelines
At the heart of the concept of community service is the willingness of a
student to invest themselves for the benefit of others. The community may be
defined as the immediate school (student body) or Marion County at large.
Following are some guidelines for what does and does not constitute community
service. If there is any question about activities that qualify, please
contact Mrs. Alvarez.
-
Students can serve in a capacity where they do not receive compensation of any
type for services rendered..
-
The only work done during school hours that is accepted is the Adopt-A-Street
project.
-
Extra curricular activities in which the student participates are not
considered community service. However, if a child helps a teacher run an
activity, it would qualify. For example, if the student helped Mrs. Alvarez
with the chess club, that student could receive credit per Mrs. Alvarez’s
approval.
-
Work done as court ordered community service or other punitive measure does
not count.
-
Community service does not apply to work done where admission is charged when
the student is part of the production. For example, a student who performs in
a play at the Civic Theatre would not receive credit for being part of the
production. Assisting with the chili cook off, Auction/Fashion Show, and other
school-sponsored events qualify for community service. (being a model does not
count)
-
Rehearsal time for performances in which the student participates does not
qualify. For example, practicing with the County Orchestra for a performance
would not count, although the time spent for the actual performance would (if
no admission were charged)
-
Only half (up to 5 hours) of the total 10 hours required for NJHS can be
performed for a church, temple, or other house of worship.
-
Parents cannot sign service forms for their own child.
-
Middle school teachers cannot sign service forms unless it is for an ongoing,
school related activity such as maintaining the Critter Cottage. Work for
individual teachers does not count unless it is for a project that benefits
the whole school (such as school store)
-
There has not been a determination for work done during the summer for credit
for next year.
