Persuasive Prompts

Prompt #1 Against Homework
Homework is part of school, and sometimes students have homework on 
the weekends as well as during the week.
Before you begin writing, think about the effects of homework on the weekend.
Now write to convince teachers to agree with your view AGAINST homework on 
the weekend.

Prompt #2 For Homework
Homework is part of school, and sometimes students have homework

Before you begin writing, think about the effects of homework on the weekend.
Now write to convince teachers to agree with your view FOR homework on the 
weekends.

Prompt #3 Adopt a School
A local television station is planning to adopt a middle school.  
Students from the school will be featured on commercials, news broadcasts, 
and other shows.
Before you begin writing, think about reasons why your school should be 
chosen.
Now write to persuade the manager of the local television 
station to adopt your school.

Prompt #4 Added Hour to School Day
The Florida Legislature is discussing the possibility of adding an 
hour to the school day to improve students learning.
Before you begin writing, think about the effects of adding an hour to the 
school day.
Now write to persuade the adult reader of your paper to agree with you view 
on whether to add an hour to the school day.

Prompt #5 School Uniforms
In some schools students wear uniforms.
Before you begin writing, think about what is involved when students are 
required to wear uniforms to school.
Now write to persuade a group of principals to agree with your view on 
whether school uniforms should be required for all students.

Prompt #6 Locker Searches
Your school has decided to conduct locker searches several times a 
year without letting students know in advance.
Before you begin writing, think about whether or not you believe students´┐Ż 
lockers should be searched without notice.
Now write to convince the principal that unannounced locker searches should 
or should not be allowed.

Prompt #7 School Exams
Taking exams is very important for a student's final grade.  The 
teachers at your school have decided to give exams in all subjects on the 
same day.
Before you begin writing, think about why your teachers should not give all 
the exams on the same day.
Now write to persuade your teachers why they should spread the exams over a 
several days.

Prompt #8 8:00 p.m. Bedtime
A leading doctor has published a research paper which claims that 
all students should be in bed by 8:00 p.m. in order for them to learn well 
in school.  It is suggested that all televisions should be off and all lights 
turned out by 8:00 p.m. so that students get a full night's rest.  Your 
parents are considering doing what the doctor suggests.
Before you begin writing, think about how you feel about the doctor's 
research and going to bed by 8:00 p.m.
Now write to convince your parents why they should not listen to the 
doctor's research and put you to bed by 8:00 p.m. each night.

Prompt #9 Best Relative of the Year
The local newspaper is offering a prize for the Best Relative of 
the Year.  
Before you begin writing, think about one of your relative that you would 
like to nominate for this prize.
Now write to convince the judges on why your relative should be chosen as 
the Relative of the Year.

Prompt #10 Wonderful Pet
You have just found what you believe to be a wonderful pet.
Before you begin writing, think about why this would be a wonderful pet to 
you and think about what you will say to your parents about your pet.
Now write to persuade your parents on why you should be allowed to get this 
wonderful pet.

Prompt #11 Most Important Invention
Think about all the inventions that have been created throughout 
history.
Before you begin writing, think about the invention that you feel has been 
the most important invention in history.
Now write to convince the reader of your paper why this has been the most 
important invention in history.

Prompt #12 Time Capsule
Time capsules are very important for future generations.
Before you begin writing, think about one item that you think should be 
placed in the time capsule.
Now write to convince the committee why your item should be included in the 
time capsule.

Prompt #13 Vilence in Music, Films, and Television
There recently has been much discussion about violence in the 
music, film, and television that children enjoy.  Some experts argue that 
the media is one major reason crime rates are on the rise.  They believe the 
violence that youths hear and see through TV, film, and music leads them to 
behave in violent ways.
Before you begin writing, think about how you feel about violence in music, 
film, and television and its affect on youth.  
Now write an editorial to the newspaper to convince others on whether 
violence in music, films, and television has a negative or positive affect 
on youth.

Prompt #14 You are Running for President
Imagine that you are a candidate for President of the United 
States.
Before you begin writing, think about all the reasons other Americans should 
vote for you for President.
Now write a speech persuading other Americans to vote for you for President.

Prompt #15 Students Working While in High School   
Many students work while they are in high school.
Before you begin writing, think about why your parents should or should not 
allow you to work while you are in high school.
Now write to persuade your parents why you should or should not be allowed 
to work while you are in high school.

Prompt #16 Community Hours for High School Students  
Many schools require students to have community hours into 
graduate high school. 
Before you begin writing, think about why students should be required to do 
community hours.
Now write to persuade students why they should be required to do community 
hours.

Prompt #17 Trip to Europe  
The club you belong to is taking a trip to Europe.
Before you begin writing, think about why you should be allowed to go with 
your club on this trip.
Now write to persuade your parents to allow you to go with your club on a 
trip to Europe.
 
Prompt #18 U.S. Schools  
Some people have said that the schools in the U.S. are not as good as 
schools in other countries.
Before you begin writing, think of all the positive aspects of schools in 
the U.S.
Now write to persuade the reader of your paper that schools in the U.S. are 
just as good (or better) than schools in other countries.

Prompt #19 Outstanding School
Your school has been nominated for an award that honors outstanding Florida 
schools.
Before you begin writing, think about things that make your school 
outstanding.
Now write to convince the judges to agree that your school is outstanding.

Prompt #20 Attend the School of Your Choice
As a student going into ninth grade, you and your family have to decide for 
you to attend a traditional high school or an online high school.
Before you begin writing, think about where you believe that you should 
attend high school.
Now write to persuade your parents to allow you to attend the high school of 
your choice.

Prompt #21 Youth Center
The mayor of your town wants to build a youth center for your community. You 
have been chosen to be on the committee to help decide what needs to be 
included in the youth center for it to be successful.
Before you begin writing, think about everything needed for the youth center 
for it to be successful.
Now write to persuade the committee to agree with you on what the youth 
center should include to be successful in your community.

Prompt #22 Free Time
Many students have a hobby or activity that they enjoy participating in 
during their free time.
Before you begin writing, think about what hobby or activity you have that 
you enjoy in your free time.
Now write to persuade your friends to join you in your hobby or activity 
during their free time.

Prompt #23 Winter Snow
Many students in Florida would like to see snow this time of year.
Before you begin writing, think about how much fun you and your family could 
have going up north and seeing snow.
Now write to persuade your parents to take your family to see snow this 
winter.

Prompt#24 Unacceptable Books
Your local public library has come under criticism for allowing patrons 
under the age of 18 to check out books that are unacceptable.  The books are 
either explicit, describe graphic violence, or use questionable language.
The town council is considering removing all questionable books from the 
library.
Before you begin writing, think about how you feel about removing all the 
questionable books from the library.
Now write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper stating your 
position to persuade the council to agree with your point of view.

Prompt #25 Parents Using Computers
Many adults are terrified to use computers.
Before you begin writing, think about why adults should not be afraid to use 
computers.
Now write to convince your parents to use computers without being afraid.

Prompt #26 Teen Center
The city government is deciding whether to build a teen center in your 
neighborhood. There have been many articles about it in the local newspaper.
Before you begin writing, think about the effects of a teen center.
Now write to convince the editor of the local newspaper to agree with your 
view in favor of building a teen center in your neighborhood.

Prompt #27 Save the Environment
There are many problems with the environment. Many people are worried about 
what will happen in the future if we do not work now to save our environment.
Before you begin writing, think about what should be done for our environment.
Now write to persuade others to agree with your view on what to do to help in 
the fight to save the environment.

Prompt #28  After High School Plan
Teenagers usually have a plan for what they want to do after high school.
Before you begin writing, think about your plans for the future.
Now write to convince your guidance counselor that this is the best plan for 
you after high school.

Prompt #29 Driver's License Age 
The state legislature is considering a proposal to change the age for a 
driver's license to 18.
Before you begin writing, think about the effects of changing the driver's 
license age to 18.
Now write to convince the legislators to agree with your view on whether or 
not to change the age for a driver's license to 18.

Prompt #30  Minimum GPA
Many school systems require students to have a minimum grade point average 
(GPA) to participate in sports and other extracuricular activities.
Before you begin writing, think about what you think would happen if there 
were no requirement for a minimum GPA to participate in sports at school.
Now write to convince the School Board to agree with your view on whether or 
not a minimum grade point average should be required for high school students 
to participate in sports in school.

Prompt #31  Smoking in Restaurants
Most cities have a law against smoking in restaurants.
Before you begin writing, think about the effects of smoking or not smoking 
in restaurants.
Now write to convince the city council members to agree withyour view on 
whether or not smoking should be allowed in restaurants.
