Spelling Contract

Weekly Spelling Contract

Read the choices below to decide what spelling activities you would like to complete for the week. You may choose any combination of activities as long as they add up to 100 points or more. Spelling words will always be given on Monday. All spelling assignments are due FRIDAY morning and no later! Put the point value next to each activity you turn in. Add all the total points and circle them on the top page of your homework. Have fun!

*Some activities will require a parent to send a note saying work was completed.

25 Point Activities

  • Rainbow Spelling: Write your words 3 times each tracing over your words with 3 different colors.
  • Divide each spelling word into syllables.
  • Illustrate at least ½ of your words. Write your spelling word under your picture.
  • I Spy: Draw a picture and hide your words inside.
  • Use pasta letters to spell your words and glue them on paper.
  • Write your words in ABC order 3 times each.
  • Take a practice test with a parent and have them grade it. (Parent signature required on test.)
  • Write your words in order from longest word to shortest word and then shortest word to longest.

50 Point Activities

  • Type each spelling word 6 times each on a computer. (Use capital letters only for words that need it.)
  • Make a word search and include your answers.
  • Write sentences using your words, underline the spelling words, and include no more than 2 spelling words per sentence.
  • Make a crossword puzzle using your words. Be sure to include your answers!
  • Cut letters (not words) from a magazine or newspaper and glue them on a paper to spell all your words.
  • Make a picture dictionary using your words: Make a book out of paper, each page can show all the words that go with that letter, an illustration, and a definition. You may also choose to use a different page for each word. As long as you have done all your words in the correct ABC order, it’s fine.
  • Choose 3 spelling words and make as many words as you can out of each. Don’t combine all the letters from all 3 words. Take one word and make as many words out of it, then go on to your next spelling word and do the same.
  • Look up each word in the dictionary and write its definition. Also be sure to write the guide words for each.
  • Make a study bag: On index cards, write your word on one side and a sentence on the other. Put them all in the bag and have your parents quiz you. They must ask you to spell it and be able to use it in a sentence. I will send this bag back home so you can continue to add it. (Parent note must be turned in stating that they quizzed you must.)
  • Write a story using all of your words. It must be at least 25 sentences long and your words must be underlined. (All sentences must be complete.)

75 Point Activities

  • Write a T.V. commercial for your favorite toy. Use at least ½ of the spelling words and be able to perform it for the class.
  • Make a game that uses all your words. Include illustrations and be prepared to explain it to the class and play it with a classmate.
  • Make a mobile that displays all of your spelling words. Be creative. Each piece of your mobile should have your word and an illustration.
  • Create a comic strip and write captions using your words. Underline your words.

Remember, spelling work for the week MUST add up to 100 points. Spelling work is to be turned in EVERY FRIDAY. If school is not held on a certain Friday or you are absent, the work will be due on Thursday or when you come back from school. You will keep a copy of this “Weekly Spelling Contract” at home and at school. In addition, a copy will be posted on our classroom website. Remember, this is a contract. This means, you agree to do your spelling work throughout the week and turn it in on Friday. Spelling work that is not turned in on time will result in two “zeros” in the grade book and a loss of ALL classroom privileges until spelling work is caught up and turned it. Have fun!

(If you have any additional spelling ideas for this contract, tell me!)
