Homework

A general letter of explanation for parents from Mrs. Cunningham’s First Grade Gifted/AWC

The purpose of homework is to practice or enhance learning.  It also teaches responsible work habits.  Homework in First grade will not exceed 30 min. daily and will be given primarily in the Language Arts area or Math.

READING: Your child’s core homework expectation is to read for at least 10 min. Monday-Friday.  This 10 min. is part of the required 30 min. homework requirement. In order to receive credit for this assignment the Independent Reading Log located in your child’s Communication Binder must be completed. Thank YOU!!!

SPELLING/VOCABULARY: A Spelling pretest will be given on Mondays and an individualized Spelling list will be created for your child.  A list of spelling activities will be found in your child’s binder. Your child will make personal choices on how to best learn his/her spelling words through these activities. Your child will have the entire week to complete the chosen activities.  This spelling homework must be returned to school on Friday with your child’s other homework. AND please return the original spelling list of words.  An individual Spelling test will be given to your child on Friday.

MATH:  There will be a variety of Math homework activities.  This homework should also be returned by Friday unless otherwise indicated. Sometimes I will send home a math activity using a deck of playing cards.  It is fun and educational.

OTHER: There will be occasions when long-term projects are assigned.  I will make every effort to decrease the regular homework assignments to allow time for working on these projects.

NOTE: The length to complete homework will vary according to the work habits and personality of your child. Even though the requirement is 30 min. (slice out that time frame in your child’s schedule right now!), I know some children may take a bit longer or a bit shorter.  Under no circumstances should your child spend MORE than 50 minutes.  Simply let your child know that you are proud of their efforts (this is assuming that your child is working diligently!) and the work that is completed will be sent back to school.

Your child will never be punished or receive a poor grade for attempting homework completion on his/her own. But PLEASE monitor that your child is attentive in completing his/her assignments and write a brief note about the time spent on work turned in so that I will know that this was his/her best effort.
