GOOD
ADVICE on helping your children become lifelong readers. Getting Started
•
Buy your kids books. They cost much less that cable TV and offer children
ownership of the written word. • Put book baskets in the bathroom and at the
breakfast table to make sure your kids always have something to read. • Put a
good reading light over your children’s beds and let them stay up a little
later when they are reading. • Turn on the closed caption feature of your
televisions, but limit total TV viewing to a few hours each week. • Remember
reading achievement is the best predictor of academic and career success. Suggestions
from Jim Trelease, national speaker and reading advocate, from Galveson County
Daily News, Mar. 6th, 2005.
