| What's NEW!
We are learning lots in our library!
The children in Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten are focusing parts
of a book. They have been introduced to the cover, spine, spine label and
the title page. During this month of November we will be focusing on the
types of books we have in the library. They have been introduced to Fiction
or make-believe books this week and we will learn the other types as we go
through this month. The Kindergarteners are focusing on stories of
Thanksgiving and a few fun surprises. We listened to, “There was an old
Lady who Swallowed a Pie”. It was funny to hear about all the items she
swallowed. We will be listening to a non-fiction book, “Thanksgiving Day”
this week and discussing what we do for Thanksgiving.
The first graders will continue to work on their library manners.
They worked on how to handle books in the library and will be identifying
different sections in our library. They will listen to “Arthur’s
Thanksgiving” and respond by making their own Bingo card for the book. We
will continue to work on identifying parts of a book.
The second graders continue to review how to treat a book and what is
on the Title Page of a book. They will also focus on the spine and spine
label on the book and where they are located in our library. They are
working with a great book, “Molly’s Pilgrim”, which deals with teasing and
why the first pilgrims came to America. We have explored the vocabulary and
practiced Cause and Effect. They will also be pre-viewing the Book Fair
highlights video!
The third graders have me for both library and computer classes. IN
LIBRARY class we are still reviewing the parts of a book: cover, book
jacket, spine, spine label, decorative end pages, and title page. They also
are working on remembering the four parts of a Title page: Title, Author,
Illustrator, and Publisher as well as Publishing City. They have also been
learning about Fiction and Nonfiction books and how to tell the difference.
We also started working on how to organize and find Fiction books in the
library. In the next several weeks we will be learning more about Non-
fiction books and the Dewey Decimal system. We are also reading “Molly’s
Pilgrim” and responding to the story by sequencing the events of a story.
IN COMPUTER class, we are working on a new program, “Microsoft
Paint”. The children are learning the different functions for each of the
tool box icons. They have had one assessment and are doing very well. We
are continuing to work with "Type to Learn", an instructional typing program
that takes the children through levels to help them learn the keyboard and
develop their typing skills.
The fourth graders have also been busy in the library and in computer
classes. IN LIBRARY class They will review how to choose the right
city on a Title page, when more than one is listed, for a Bibliography.
Just so you know, it is the city that is closest to the city you live in at
the moment. They have also been reviewing how to tell the difference between
a Fiction and Nonfiction book. They will be learning about the Dewey
Decimal system in the next few weeks and how books are organized in this
section of the library. They are reading and assessing,”Sarah Morton’s
Day”. It is a historical fiction about a young pilgrim girl who lives in
Plymouth. The book’s pictures are actually taken in the Plymouth plantation
that is a historical tourist destination. They will be answering critical
thinking questions and sequencing the events in the story. We will also be
looking at “Samuel Eaton’s Day A day in the life of a Pilgrim Boy” next
week. IN COMPUTER class, we are continuing to work with "Type to
Learn". I am also introducing them to this web-site which has many links to
a lot of great and fun sites for your child and you. We have been learning
how to use Microsoft Paint. The children will be assessed in the coming
weeks on their understanding of this program and its uses.
My fifth graders are focusing on their computer skills this month.
They have been sharpening their typing skills with "Type to Learn". We have
also been working with Microsoft Paint. The children already have some
knowledge of this program I am trying to develop it further. We wil be
working on research skills and how to make note cards in the coming weeks.
