Kindergarten Summer Reading

This is a small list of suggested books for your child to read. You may want to try another book by one of the authors listed below as well.

Reading With Your Child

When reading with your child:

  • Let your child have opportunities to choose what book they want to read.
  • Pick a quiet time to read.
  • Refer to your child as a "reader."
  • Sit close to your child. Let your child see the pictures and print.
  • Praise your child for any attempts to participate.
  • Point to words as you read them.
  • Discuss words that your child may not understand.
  • Talk about the story and story characters. Compare with other stories.
  • Ask open-ended questions.
  • Reread the book and encourage your child to join in on familiar phrases, turn the pages, and predict what will happen next.

Summer Reading List for students going into 1st Grade

Bang, Molly. The Paper Crane. When a restaurant owner is kind to a hungry man his generosity is rewarded in a special way.

Barrett, Judi. Animals Should Definitely Not Wear Clothing. Some things are just too funny to think about--like a walrus in a coat and tie. Read the book and see for yourself.

Brown, Marc. Arthur’s Teacher Trouble. Arthur and his friends are nervous about their new teacher. Also any other book in the Arthur or D.W. series.

Bryan, Ashley. What a wonderful world. Beautiful illustrations accompany the text of this classic song.

Carle, Eric. The Very Hungry Caterpillar. What happens when a hungry caterpillar eats through foods, spins a cocoon and becomes a butterfly.

Carrick, Carol. Patrick’s Dinosaur. When Patrick and his older brother Hank visit the zoo, Patrick imagines that he sees dinosaurs everywhere. Also by Carol Carrick, What Happened to Patrick’s Dinosaurs.

Conrad, Pam. The Tub People. The tub boy is sucked down the drain and the entire family is affected by the mishap.

de Paola, Tomie. Strega Nona. Italian folktale in which Big Anthony is determined to use Strega Nona’s magic powers.

Dorros, Arthur. Abuela. While riding on a bus with her grandmother, a little girl imagines that they are carried up into the sky and fly over the sights of
New York City.

Greenfield, Eloise. Honey, I Love, and other poems. Sixteen poems tell of love and the simple joys of everyday life as seen through the eyes of a child.

Henkes, Kevin. Julius, the Baby of the World. After her baby brother is born, Lilly is not happy about the attention he gets from her parents until her cousin makes fun of the baby.

Heo, Yumi. One Afternoon. Sounds of an ordinary day in
New York City with a boy and his mother.

Hutchins, Pat. Rosie’s Walk. Will the fox be able to catch Rosie the hen?

Jonas, Ann. Aardvarks, Disembark! Call the animals off the ark from A to Z

Kraus, Robert. Herman the Helper. Herman, the octopus, helps his family, friends and anyone who needs him.

Kuklin, Susan. How my family lives in
America. Three youngsters whose parents are immigrants tell how they perpetuate their cultural heritage with cherished traditions, language, food, songs, religion, games and school.

Lobel, Arnold. Frog and Toad Are Friends. Five stories about the friendship of a frog and a toad and their adventures.

Minarik, Else Holmelund. Little Bear. A series of tales about an animal family and their relationships.

Modesitt, Jeanne. Mama, If You Had A Wish. Little bunny learns that Mama loves him just the way he is.

Morozumi, Atsuko. One Gorilla. Can you find and count the animals in the book.

Noble, Trinka Hakes. The Day Jimmy’s Boa Ate the Wash. See what happens when Jimmy’s boa goes on the class field trip to the farm.

Rathman, Peggy. Officer Buckle and Gloria. The children at the
Napville Elementary School ignore Officer Buckle’s safety tips until Gloria, the dog, livens up the act.

Reiser, Lynn. Margaret and Margarita/Margarita y Margaret. Two girls with the same name play in the park and begin a friendship.

Roe, Eileen. Con Mi Hermano/With My Brother. A little boy can’t wait to grow up and be like his brother.

Van Allsburg, Chris. Two Bad Ants. After leaving the safety of their colony, two ants embark on a dangerous adventure that convinces them to return to their former life.

Te Ata. Baby Rattlesnake. Willful Baby Rattlesnake throws tantrums to get his rattle before he’s ready, but he misuses it and learns a lesson.

Viorst, Judith. Alexander and the Terrible Horrible No Good Very Bad Day. Alexander experiences a day full of bad incidents.

Westcott, Nadine Bernard. I Know an Old Lady Who Swallowed A Fly. The story of the lady that kept swallowing bigger and bigger things until she swallowed a horse.

Williams, Vera B. A Chair For My Mother. A little girl, her mother, and her grandmother buy a big comfortable chair with the pennies they saved after a fire destroys their apartment.

Wood, Audrey. The Napping House. Rhythmic text tell the story of what happens on a rainy day when Granny, and the child, dog, cat, and mouse are all awakened suddenly by a flea bite.

Young, Ed. Lon Po Po: A Red Riding Hood Story From
China. The story of three Chinese sisters who allow the wolf into the house because they think it is their Po Po, their grandmother.
