Circulation of Materials
Students, K- 8, may check out books. Videos, CD’s and other audiovisual
materials are reserved for teachers and staff only. Students in K – 2
may check out one book, grades 3 – 8 may check out two books. At the
discretion of the librarian older students may be allowed to check out
more for research purposes.
The loan period for students is one week. Books may be renewed if they
are not otherwise on reserve for a student or class. Books must be
presented in order to be renewed.
Reference books may not be checked out.
Back issues of popular magazines may be checked out to students in
grades 3 -8. Current issues of all magazines may not be checked out.
Students are expected to return library materials on time. Overdue
notices are given to students as a courtesy. A book not returned within
one day of the due date will be considered overdue. An overdue notice
will be sent home with the cost accrued for the book(s). The fine for
overdue books is 25 cents per day. Habitual
lateness could result in a temporary loss of library privileges.
Lost materials should be reported promptly to the librarian. Payment
must be made for any loss or damage to books or library materials before
students may check out anything more. The cost for a lost book is the
replacement cost of that item and a $1.00 fee to cover the processessing
materials for the lost or damaged book.
Reading Promotions
Ongoing reading promotions are used to encourage reading and
participation in the Media Center. Storytime, book talks on HFS News and
monthly book clubs are some of the ongoing promotions. Contest and
activities built around holidays and themes are also used periodically.
Selection of Materials
The selection of library materials is the particular responsibility of
the librarian with the approval of the principal. The selection of
materials is cooperative, continuing process, involving administrators,
teachers, the librarian/media specialist and the students.
The curriculum at Holy Family Catholic School is the primary factor
influencing selections. Other factors include the reading interests,
abilities, and backgrounds of the students. The media specialist is
primarily responsible for selecting materials and such, to be sure, which
his/her choices are in agreement with statement, philosophy, goals, and
objectives of Holy Family Catholic School.
The librarian on the basis of the selection policy evaluates all
requests.
Gift Policy
All donations are accepted with the understanding that there is a finite
space available in the library. Gifts are accepted with the
understanding that they will be evaluated on the need and the basis of
the criteria set forth for selection. Only those meeting these needs
and standards will be added.
The disposition of donated books is entirely up to the librarian who
will judge them by criteria contained in the selection policy. If a
book is not considered appropriate for the collection, the librarian may
dispose of it, sell it at a used book sale benefiting the library, or
pass it along to another more appropriate library.
Parents also have the opportunity to donate a book in their child’s name
in honor of their birthday by joining the Birthday Book Club.
Information is sent home at the beginning of the year describing this
program. Parents fill out a form describing their child’s interests and
then donate a flat fee to be decided by the librarian/media specialist.
The librarian/media specialist will then purchase a book that will fit
their interests and benefit the library and place a Book Plate in the
book in honor of that child.
Copyrighted Materials
It is not the policy of Holy Family Catholic School to make multiple
copies of copyrighted materials. It is also not the policy to download
or print any copyrighted materials form an electronic source, nor is it
policy to scan copyrighted materials.
Student Library Assistants
Student assistants in the Library Media Center are very helpful to our
library program.
Students in grades 5th through 8th who are interested in becoming an
assistant must fill out a Student Library Assistant application in May for
the following year. They must have a parent permission form and a teacher
recommendation form filled out as well. The librarian selects students out
of the pool of applicants based on teacher recommendations and skill levels.
The library assistants will come and help in the library during one of
their Physical Education classes once a week. The day trhey will come in
wil be assigned at the beginning of the school year.
To make available materials which will:
•Extend the students’ knowledge and experience.
•Meet the students’ need for recreational and instructional reading,
viewing, and listening.
•Meet the needs of variations in educational level, ability and
interest.
To help students develop:
•A positive attitude toward learning.
•Habits of inquiry and skill in self-directed study.
•Skill in analyzing, interpreting, and evaluating information.
To encourage the use of all library materials by every student throughout
the school day, before and after school, and at home.
To encourage the use of public library materials to supplement the
resources of the school library.
To plan cooperatively with teachers in the selection of material, this
will enrich the curriculum through the use of a variety of media materials.
