SUMMER HOMEWORK

I admit it, it's been nice to not do too much homework this summer! Yet, I know the importance of basic math fact practice. Well, here's a simple suggestion that I've used with some of my favorite kids this summer. Use dice!

If the kids are watching tv, use the commercial break to hit the mute button and start rolling the dice. Use two or four dice depending on level of ability and challenge. Roll two dice, then add quickly, and repeat. See how many problems can be done in one commercial break and try to add faster next time. Need a challenge? Roll 4 dice.

Multiplication: Master all the facts that can be made by rolling 2 dice, then try it with 4 dice. Add the pairs together then multiply. You can also use a deck of cards or simply run through a deck of flash cards.

Summer Homework Summary:

Be ready to turn in a summer homework folder to Mrs. Bridge in August.

1. Create a folder or a notebook and include journal entries, write stories, or reading responses.

2. Keep a reading log. Extra pages are available for download on the scanned items page. The genre tally page will be used at the end of each month for a math challenge... On a sheet of paper for June, July, and August, list the minimum, maximum, median, and mode for all the books read. (Examples to follow on this page during the first week of July.)

3. Math Story Problems: See "Story Problems Book" file on scanned items page. It's 164 pages. See also the 50 math questions on the tabs titled, "Summer Math" and "Summer Math 2."

4. Visit www.raz-kids.com REGULARLY. If you haven't logged on at home, you'll need "hwomersley" as the teacher login userid.

5. Check out a science book from the public library and do an experiment. Write about it!

6. www.letterpals.com If you signed up when I sent home the parent letter. If you missed it, email me for the teacher/school access code. You can log in early, but the letters officially begin on June 22nd.

7. You might want to keep your skills sharp by getting a Summer Bridge Activities workbook.
