AP LIT SYLLABUS

.

JANUARY 2010

* * * * * * * * *.

**HAMLET THREADS have been up on the GENERAL  PAGE. Sign ups were due by Friday DEC. 18 to receive points. (A few people waited until too late to sign up for points, but if you want the grade for the handouts, you still need to send me an e-mail for a category!)

Your 45 copies of the 4-page handouts, as well as your handout copy sent to me as an e-mail attachment, are due THURSDAY. JAN. 7th, soon after school resumes.

Below is a copy of the directions from the GENERAL AP LIT PAGE.

THREADS FOR HAMLET: E-mail me to sign up, first come, first
served. One person in period 2; 2 on most categories in period 3.

CREATE HANDOUTS, front and back of TWO sheets of paper, stapled—4
pages total. Use 12 font, Times New Roman for the text of the quotations,
but you can add other fonts, clip art, lists, etc., for interest. Colored
paper will make your handouts spectacular. Create 45 so that both
classes can benefit.

THIRD PERIOD: *** If you have the same topic as someone else, your handout
must be set up differently. Do NOT cut and paste from junk Internet
sites

================================================================

NOTE: The FINAL EXAM for first term will occur mid-January. If you have not read one of the books, you might want to do so. You will be tested over the 4 literary works we've studied, decoding of unfamiliar poetry, and terminolgy.

**The major grades for the 2nd 9 weeks involved the research paper and Faulkner.

Your first-term final grade will be the average of the 2 9-week grades (40% for each grading period) and 10% for the final exam. For some of you who slacked off on the research project, that 10% final exam will be critical.

WRITING FOLDERS: ALL drafts and completed essays should be filed in your writing folder, whether or not you revised the papers. Note: I put in tentative grades in period 3, but will examine the folders more when school resumes in Jan.

.

==================================================================.

SAS PATHWAYS REVISION INFORMATION & EDITING  OFFER by Michael Towles (3rd period) -- See the Announcement page. I have the URL there. E-mail me if you can't remember the password.

=======================================================.

@@@@@@@@@@@@ WRITING   FOLDER   CHECK--whether you are here or not:

FRIDAY Dec. 18. The folder people and other helpers will go through the logs and contents, so make sure that everything is in place and logged in accurately. We will file all original poems #1, AILD essay #1 and the poetry done Wed.

** Some people are missing the 2nd writing assignment we did--the diagnostic with the writing evaluation sheet. Some are missing one or more Heart of Darkness Essay, and some are missing one or both Cuckoo Nest essays. One person was missing a folder (?). How does that work? If you have kept up with all papers, you should have the same number of papers in your folder as everyone else. Your log should look approximately like their logs. If yours is not in shape, you'll need to come in after school and straighten it out. Try to locate any lost papers. If done online, print out another copy.

NOTE: I will rescore the folders after the holidays. Some were missing far too much.

Ω Ω Ω Ω Ω Ω Ω Ω Ω Ω Ω Ω Ω Ω Ω Ω Ω Ω

Invictus by William Ernest Henley

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll.
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.
