AP Chem FAQQuestions parents and student frequently ask about Advanced Placement Chemistry.
When will students take the 2010 AP Chemistry exam? The 2010 AP Chemistry exam is Tuesday, May 11. What is the structure of the AP Chemistry exam? The three hour AP Chemistry exam consists of two sections. Students have 90 minutes to answer 75 multiple choice questions then another 90 minutes for 6 free response questions. The free response questions contain several parts and can be either theory or calculation based questions. Students will then receive their exam scores in July. Is there a lab fee for AP Chemistry? No. The district office provides money for AP lab supplies based on the performance of the students from the previous year and the number of students currently enrolled. We did receive enough funding to also purchase the Princeton Review book referred to in the summer work packet for each student. Can AP Chemistry students join (or continue to be a part of) the LHS ChemClub? Absolutely! In fact some of our officers are in AP Chemistry this year. The LHS ChemClub is affiliated with the American Chemical Society and members can choose to be involved in service learning grant projects, elementary science/community outreach and research projects. Membership forms are available from Ms. Pierce. Where can I find more information about the College Board AP program? Visit http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/ap/about.html for general information on the AP program and exam score reporting to colleges. Will AP Chemistry students have homework every night? Since there is a large amount of curriculum to cover students will be required to work on practice homework questions at home most nights. Also, because the AP exam is cumulative students will have to continuously review material throughout the year to achieve mastery of the concepts. Students will have a textbook at home for homework use and access to an online version of the textbook if they prefer that format. What will AP Chemistry lab work involve? Students will receive a teacher prepared lab manual that includes the 22 labs required for AP Chemistry by the College Board. They will also need a composition book to use as their research notebook to mimic the lab work procedures in many college courses. Does AP Chemistry prepare students for college chemistry courses? Past students who have completed freshman college chemistry classes report they were very prepared for the college course. Students comment they did not encounter any content topics that were not covered in AP Chemistry and their high school AP notebooks were a helpful reference resource. |
