Mrs. Powell's and Ms. Atkinson's 4th Grade Advanced Work Classes |
Ms. Atkinson's HomeworkPage updated on September 20,2009. See Agenda Book for DAILY assignments.
Time is spent each day discussing homework and recording it in the agenda book. Students are expected to copy their assignments and pack all needed supplies into their backpack. Failure to complete homework will result in a Work Habits check. The following "regular" assignments can be expected each week. Students may choose to complete them ahead of time. Spelling and DLR - Each child has been given a spelling list covering the first 10 weeks of school. Spelling lists and activities can be found at www.spellingcity.com. Please note that AWC students have an additional 5 words each week found at SpellingCity and on their hard copy. No time will be given in class to study spelling. Students are expected to learn words on their own and be prepared for a test each Friday. Those students who receive a 100% on Friday's spelling test are excused from spelling homework the following week. Additionally, students need to prepare for Friday's DLR test. Weekly Reader - Students will be given a lengthy Weekly Reader assignment in class each Friday. Usually, this assignment will be completed with a partner. If it is not completed in class, it automatically becomes homework and is due the following school day. Sometimes extra credit points will be offered for specific questions. Check out each week's worksheet to see if that opportunity is present. Additional activities and support related to the Weekly Reader assignment can be found at www.weeklyreader.com. (refer to Senior Edition) if you choose to delve deeper. Math - Students are expected to complete that week's ADD pages in time for correction on Tuesdays. They are to study for the weekly test which is currently given on Thursdays. Chapter tests will be given at the end of each chapter. Math Superstars: Math Superstar homework papers will be distributed on Fridays and will be due the following Wednesday. Complete as many problems as you are able. Reading - Children should read a minimum of 20 minutes each night. There are numerous competitions and rewards in place for voracious readers. Remember, attaining a minimum of 25 AR points per grading period contributes to their Reading effort grade on the report card. Failure to attain those 25 points will result in "N" or "U" for their effort grade. That will result in ineligibility for honor rolls and the Lakeview Lancer award. Online Activities - I have registered each child for VMathLive, EdHelper memory activities, and the Online Math League. I recommend that each child complete at least one memory game at EdHelper - (5 minutes in length) three times each week. You will find it is a fun way to increase memory and processing speed. VMathLive provides the opportunity to practice math skills in a competitive and motivating way. I suggest visiting this site 3 times a week as well. Each Monday I will run the report showing which student earned the most points on VMath for the preceding week. That student will be rewarded with a Sprite Zero. The online math league provides practice math problem solving tests. Children will compete online in November. In additon, you will find many other fun education links on the "Links" pages of this site. |
