Homework

                  WEEKLY HOMEWORK WEEK OF 11-16-09

Sight Words: arms every feet head school use way your these thing
(Practice these words daily for recognition. Your child does not have to be
able to spell these words.)

Spelling Words: long song sing ring bring thing us must does food

Robust Vocabulary: ashamed superb athletic awkward soared mused

These are "WOW" words I am teaching in the classroom. Your child will be
exposed to the definitions and the words in context. Please try to use these
words in daily conversations with your child. Your child does not have to be
able to read or spell these words, but does need to understand their meanings
for the Weekly Reading Test.

Math Fact of the Week: 3+5, 5+3

Below you will find a Suggested Schedule of Activities. All homework is sent
home on Mondays and due on Thursdays. You may schedule the activities to
meet your family’s needs, as long as the homework is returned by Thursday.

SUGGESTED SCHEDULE:

Monday: Practice the sight words by playing a game. Write the Spelling
words two times each. Complete the Math practice sheet.

FEATURED GAME: CONTEXT PRACTICE

CONTEXT PRACTICE
Higher level word work includes context practice. This involves
using “context” or the body of the sentence to solve an unknown word. (This
is like the weekly multiple-choice reading test your child takes.) First have
your child help you make a sentence using some of his or her past and present
sight / vocabulary and spelling words. Next, write the sentence on a strip of
paper. Call your child’s attention to putting a “finger space” between each
word, a capital letter at the beginning, and punctuation at the end (a
period, question mark, or exclamation point). Then cut the sentence apart
separating the words. Have your child reassemble the sentence. Your child
should read the sentence to be sure it makes sense. Then cover one of the
words in the sentence with a post it note. Have your child try to use
the “context” of the sentence to figure out the covered word. Show one letter
at a time to reveal the mystery word. As a follow up activity, your child can
illustrate the sentence.

Tuesday: Practice all math facts and sight words. Complete the family
Language Arts activity.

Wednesday: Read the assigned book(s). Ask comprehension questions such as:
What happened first, next, last? Who was the main character? What was the
problem? Has anything like that ever happened to you? What would you do if
it did? Return the book(s), bag and signed pink slip on THURSDAY. Practice
all sight words and math facts.

Thursday: Study Spelling words for the written test tomorrow. Practice
the new and previously sent home math facts for the TIMED fact test
tomorrow. The test will include all facts previously sent home. The goal is
to complete all 30 problems in 3 minutes or less. Practice the sight words
for automatic and quick recognition.
