Computer Class News Flash

The second quarter has begun and we had our first "real" cool weather - I loved it and am waiting for the next one.

The first graders should have a pretty good idea of where the home row keys and the special keys are. I do encourage practicing at home. Like anything else that has to be learned repetition and practice is so very important. For a few weeks we will be working in Microsoft Word. They typed their spelling words and some even made up sentences and typed them. I think that they were pretty proud of themselves and should be!

Second grade is actually doing a typing assignment in class! They are typing a story about a pumpkin in paragraph form. It is wonderful to see the self confidence that most of the students are exhibiting as they type away. They are learning that there is 1 (yes 1) space after a period or comma and that Enter is pressed only at the end of a paragraph or title. They learned the word art feature and will be inserting clip art next week.

The third graders are still working on their state Power points. The inputting of information is close to being done and then the fun begins. They will be learning how to put in animations and clip art and backgrounds. They will also be presenting their Power points to the rest of the class when they are finished.

Fourth graders are beginning to research Florida Indians. They will be working in groups of 2 and will produce a Power point presentation to share with the rest of the class. This is a unit of study that the students really enjoy so researching will not be a problem for them.

Fifth is finishing up presenting their Power points and I was very pleased with the results of their work. They did a wonderful job. They will soon begin a new project which will be to type a book report on "The Indian in the Cupboard" using Microsoft Word.

Sixth and seventh grades are going to working on different projects such as Power point, web page, brochure, and posters all dealing with the environment. This is being done with the science teacher. This is the first time we are doing this unit of study. Caring for God's creation is something that our church is responding too.

Finally the eighth graders will be working on a project on saints. They will be creating prayer cards and a report. There will also be a special activity tied to that will include one of the younger grades.

The typing assignments for the second quarter are up. I will be explaining all of them to the students on their next computer day. Thursday for 3rd through 5th and Monday for 6th through 8th.

Did you see the MHR Chronicle on the MHR website? The students wrote the articles - what talented students we have!

Hope to see everyone at Octoberfest!

God Bless,
