Interactive Read Aloud

During Interactive Read Aloud time, the teacher reads aloud a book to the children. This book is chosen for specific purpose (to develop vocabulary, for enjoyment, to make connections, introduce new content, etc.) The children listen to the story and "turn and talk" to respond to the text.

Shared Reading

During Shared Reading, the teacher conducts a mini-lesson based on a specific reading strategy or skill. The teacher selects the text and reads it during shared reading, however all children have access to the text through the overhead or a big book, or each child has copy of the text. During this time, we are learning about becoming readers who interact with a text. We create anchor charts to hold our thinking so that we can refer back to them during Indepenent Reading.

Independent Reading/Activity Time

During Indpendent Reading, the children are engaged in reading a text at their "Just Right." level. They may be engaged in any one of the following activities:

• Read Independently/Practice skill from mini-lesson
• Meet with Reading Partners-Partners set up meeting times to discuss a text that they have chosen to read simultaneously
• Respond in their Reading Journal (RJ's)
• Guided Reading- A small group of students read a book together with support from Mrs. Cervone
• Reading Conferences-Mrs. Cervone meets with individuals to discuss their reading progress and to set and monitor personal reading goal.

Sharing Time

As Reader's Workshop comes to a close, we gather at our meeting area one final time. During this time the class might:

• Meet as a whole group to refer back to the mini-lesson and think further
• Meet together to think about and respond to questions such as: What did you learn about reading today? What did you learn about yourself as a reader?

Accountable Talk

During Reader's Workshop, we learn from talking to each other. We are held accountable to one another in creating a community of learners. In order to assist the children in their ability to participate in conversations, a unit of study for conducting accountable talk was created. Click Here to view this unit.
