WHAT IS T.E.A.M.?
Teaching Enrichment Activities to Minorities program, the main purpose of this program is to develop your child's critical thinking skills. The planned program is included in all of your child's basic subjects.
The program goals are as follows: * To develop students' thinking skills * To link critical thinking skills to all of the subject areas * To prepare students for possible placement into advanced academics and talent programs * To encourage more student/parent involvement in the community
WHY WAS YOUR CHILD CHOSEN FOR THE TEAM PROGRAM?
Your child was chosen for the T.E.A.M. program because he/she shows motivation, creativity, and an eagerness to learn. This decision was made by your child's teacher the year prior to placement in the program. The teacher used a special checklist which indicates that your child has the strengths needed for success in the T.E.A.M. program. It is important that you are aware that changes in your child's placement may take place. Most of the students identified for T.E.A.M. do very well in the program, but because of its faster pace and emphasis on critical thinking, this program may not be appropriate for all students. All children need to be successful. If the T.E.A.M. program does not work out successfully for your child, please understand that removing the child from the program is for the benefit of your child.
THINKING SKILL INSTRUCTION
The T.E.A.M. program will offer your child a challenging experience. Your child will be expected to cover more material within the classroom and at home. This will require more from you as the parent. The more you guide, assist and supervise your child at home, the more your child will learn. The T.E.A.M. program will be using a variety of exciting material and motivating teaching methods. Materials may include puzzles, games and activities. These materials and methods will help to develop your child's critical thinking skills in all of the subject areas. The T.E.A.M. program concentrates on higher level questioning. These questions allow the child to give a variety of different correct answers and move away form the typical "yes" and "no" responses. You will notice that your child will be involved in more oral activities in the classroom. This type of questioning should be continued in the home under your supervision. Take advantage of this increased motivation and enjoy the time that you spend with your child.
