   Grade One Gazette
This week we learned about plant and animal adaptations. We read two
stories: The Box and Wigs in a Box. We also learned a poem about apples, and
started to practice our "Fall" poem. In math, we learned addition
strategies, including using a number line and counting on. We had an
exciting time writing our animal riddles, and sharing them with the class.
Class picture money is due before September 29th. Please remember to send in
your child's envelope. Thank you so much for another wonderful week of
learning!

CONGRATULATIONS TO TEAM # 4 FOR WINNING LUNCH BUNCH THIS WEEK! (KAI, EMILY
R., DYLAN AND ALIS!)

Volunteers are always welcome….
The Miami-Dade County Schools require volunteers to have an approved
volunteer form on file. If you have one on file from last year, there is no
need to fill out a new form. Beginning September 1st, the forms will be
available on the school board’s website only. (www2.dadeschools.net) We
welcome volunteers throughout the year, and especially for the following
activities:

Math Super Stars Classroom Guest Speakers

Home Room Parent Take Home Tuesday

Caps Against Cancer Lunch Volunteers

Please send a note in your child’s home learning folder if you are interested
in working on one of these projects.

Ask your child about these exciting activities in our classroom…

Accelerated Reader Program: Students read and take computer-generated
quizzes. Points are accumulated throughout the nine week grading period.
Each student is given a goal based on their reading level.

Wednesday’s Lunch Bunch- The winning team eats lunch with the teacher!

Class Poetry: Each week a class poem is memorized by the class. A class
poetry book is kept throughout the year.

Class Quilt Project: Each child will contribute a quilt square that will
represent them on the class quilt. More information will be forthcoming.

Math Super Stars: Every Tuesday, students will complete a Math Super Stars
home learning assignment. School-wide participation is required.

Teams: Students work in teams. They earn points for good behavior,
participation in classroom activities, attendance, etc. (Students will have
an opportunity to be in different teams throughout the year.)

Caps Against Cancer: A unit of study on skin cancer awareness is culminated
with the decorating of our own “Caps against Cancer”. Students wear them
during outdoor activities.

Box Tops for Education: Box Tops for Education are collected daily. These
are used to purchase library books for the media center. Incentives are
given to the classes with the most collected.

Classroom Guest Speakers: Professionals from the community are invited to
share their expertise on selected topics of instruction. (Ex. Captain
Gutierrez, from the Miramar Fire Department conducts a fire safety
presentation and presents information about fire safety.)

Fun Facts: Students are invited to bring in “Fun Facts” about the topic of
discussion for the week. One or two sentences that your child can read and
share is all that is needed. You can use the computer or have it hand-
written. Make it fun and interesting!

If you need to speak to me you may call the Primary Learning Center at 305-
822-7757 ex.t.148, or you may send in a note with your child, or an e-mail to
mmenagutierrez@dadeschools.net and I will contact you during the day. In
case of an emergency, you may call me at school. If it’s something that will
impact your child’s day, it is important to me. Clear communication is
essential.

THANK YOU for your support, letters, encouragement and a wonderful opening
week! I look forward to working with your child and families to make this a
truly exceptional year!

Mrs. Gutierrez
Dear Parents,
Welcome to one of the most incredible years your child will have in
his/her school career!
First grade is an exciting time as children embark upon new adventures in
the world of learning. This is a year of important transitions.
During First Grade, your child will learn how to read, write stories,
add, subtract, and so much more. I hope to make your child's first full day
of learning experience a fun and exciting one. I hope to instill a love of
learning that will last throughout your child's years of schooling.
So much happens in First Grade! It is extremely important that we work
together as a team to ensure that your child will receive the best
education.
Here are some ways you can
help:

     *	Review your child’s home learning folder
DAILY!!!
     * Reminder! Take Home
Tuesday folders have important information
     * MATH SUPERSTARS are DUE by Friday of the week it is received.
     *	Review Rules. Please create Rewards and Consequences that will
happen at home for Grades and School Behavior.
     *	Read to and with your child everyday, if possible. The more your
child is exposed to language, the easier it will be for him/her to
incorporate new skills in reading and writing in the
classroom.

Remember to record all reading in your child's reading log.
     *	Celebrate your child's success, no matter how small it may seem

Please do not hesitate to call me at (305)822-7757 ext, 148, or e-mail me at
mmenagutierrez@dadeschools.net with ANY questions or concerns!
Thank You
