Course Description:

The mission of Most Holy Redeemer Inter-Parochial School’s Health and Physical Education Department is to provide a safe and positive learning environment that gives every student the opportunity to gain the knowledge, skills and attitudes that will enable him or her to achieve a lifestyle of healthy physical, emotional and social choices.

The P.E. and Health curriculum for all grade levels at our school is mandated by the Diocese of St. Petersburg.

The objectives of Physical Education and Health Sciences are to:

·        Promote general health and overall fitness

·        Promote and foster an understanding of healthy and active lifestyles

·        Help students understand that activity is a key part of physical well being

·        Develop cognitive thinking and physical movement skills

·        Learn to work together

·        Develop physical and mental capacity to succeed

·        Evaluate and improve performance

Students are encouraged to develop and engage in good health practices, good sportsmanship, self control, self-expression, and are given the opportunity for development of positive social interaction with their peers within the context of an active physical education/health science classroom. Physical education teaches students how their bodies move and how to perform a variety of physical activities. Students learn the health related benefits of regular physical activities and skills to adopt a physically active, healthy lifestyle.

Instruction can range from traditional sports to exercise programs and classroom learning. For this reason, it is imperative that each student come prepared to participate with proper P.E. uniform, supplies, and homework assignments for each scheduled class meeting. Parents should advise the school office and me in writing if this is not medically possible.

My Responsibilities:

·        To encourage all students to grow mentally, emotionally, spiritually, and to reach their highest physical potential

·        To provide a positive learning environment

·        To prepare and teach effective health and physical education lessons

·        To help students develop positive attitudes about leisure time and recreation

·        To help develop the student’s understanding about the role physical activity plays in relationship to a healthy productive life

Student Responsibilities:

·        Come to class prepared

·        Follow classroom rules

·        Come to P.E. class with proper uniform

·        Work cooperatively with others

·        Be respectful to all teachers, students, and school property

·        To do their very best!

Parent Responsibility:

  • To encourage and assist your child with necessary uniform and supplies needed for class
  • To help your child develop a sense of responsibility, organization and independence
  • To contact me directly with any questions or concerns. The best way to reach me is by email s.blount@mhr-tampa.com

PLEASE NOTE: Written excuse from parent /guardian/physician describing reason for limitations in P.E./Health Science class must be presented to me upon entering class.

Homework Policy:

  • Homework will be assigned occasionally in grades 3-8
  • P.E. Wellness Log is assigned daily for eighth grade students
  • Homework must be complete, neat, and turned in on the due date to receive full credit. If the student is absent on the day the assignment was due, the student is expected to turn in the assignment the day he/she returns.

Classroom Rules:

·        To perform in physical education to the best of their ability

·        To respect themselves and their peers regardless of place and times

·        To show good sportsmanship at all times

·        Follow behavior expectations

Periodically when a student’s behavior, conduct, demeanor, and/or classwork raises concerns that might affect his/her grades, direct contact with the parent or guardian may become necessary. If warranted, a parent/teacher conference might be arranged. Parent/teacher cooperation in reconciling disciplinary, academic, and behavioral deficiencies is fundamental to positive progress in P.E./Health Science classes. Working as a “team” doesn’t just apply to the sporting field. The parent/teacher/student/school community form an active team with one purpose; Positive Progress for the Student.

Behavior Expectations:

  • All students are expected to abide by classroom and P.E. rules
  • All students are expected to follow the school’s Code of Conduct and Dress/Hair/Jewelry Code
