Kindergarten A-Z

Dear Parents,

We are excited about the upcoming school year and can't wait to get started!

Please read the information provided below. Hopefully it will answer many of the questions you may have.

**********Important Note*********

For the first two weeks of school, Kindergarten students will wear a nametag home each day.   This nametag will have important information such as your child’s name, address, phone, bus number (if applicable), teacher’s name and room number.  Please be sure your child wears this nametag to school each day.

A-Attendance

Please take special note of the attendance policy in the Student Code of Conduct, pages 45-48.

http://www.duvalschools.org/static/students/codeofconduct/CodeofConduct.pdf

B-Backpacks

Each child will need a backpack to carry home his/her papers and agenda. No rolling backpacks are allowed. Please make sure the backpack is large enough to carry an agenda and a jacket during the winter months.

C-Car Riders

Each day at 2:40 kindergarten teachers will dismiss car riders in a safe and organized manner.  Kindergarten students will exit the building and be seated in the designated Kindergarten area.  If you walk to the sidewalk to pick up your child, please do not call your child to come to you while we are exiting the building. Once all Kindergarten students are seated, teachers will give a signal and then allow students to be dismissed to a parent or guardian.  This keeps students from running to their parents/guardians and allows us to maintain order and safety during the dismissal of these young students.  If you wish to stay in your car for pick up, place a sheet of paper labeled with your child’s name and grade level on your dash.  Once your child’s name has been called, a Safety Patrol will escort your child to the vehicle.  Please help us by talking with your child about how these dismissal procedures will take place each day.  We appreciate your cooperation!

D-Drop-Off

If you drop your child off in the morning, please be mindful that the doors do not open until 8:00. New Berlin provides a morning extended day program for children who must arrive earlier than 8:00. Please stop by our front office or call 716-7601 for details concerning hours and fees. Your child must be in the classroom by 8:35. If they arrive after this time they will be counted tardy. If your child is tardy you must fill out a tardy slip in the front office.

E-Email

A great way to keep in touch with us is through e-mail. Our e-mail addresses at school are fergersoni@duvalschools.org and doroughp@duvalschools.com .

F-Folders

Every Friday your child will take home his or her poetry folder. Please take the time to listen to your kindergartener read the poems he or she learned in class. Please remember to return the folder on Monday.

G-Grading

Every nine weeks your child will receive a report card. This report card is performance-based and will be an on-going assessment throughout the school year. Half way through each nine week period, we will send home a progress report to let you know how your child is performing.

H-Homework

Beginning the second week of school, homework will be assigned on Monday and expected to be returned and completed no later than Friday of the week it was assigned. Completion of homework is a very important part of the academic process. The fun activities in the homework not only reinforce work done at school, it also gives you the opportunity to be involved in your child’s education. Parents, you are also expected to read at least one book per night and log it on your child’s book log. The goal is to have each student log at least 180 books by the end of the year. Students that meet the reading goal will get to attend our school’s annual Reading Celebration!

I-Illness

The question of when to keep your child home from school is often a difficult one, especially when decisions must be made first thing in the morning. It is important, however, to keep your child home if he/she is ill. This helps to make them more comfortable and prevents others from becoming ill. Children focus more effectively in the classroom when they are healthy.

J-Join the PTA

Please join New Berlin’s Parent Teacher Association. We’d love to have 100% membership for our class. If you are interested, more information will be given at our Orientation, August 20th, PTA Volunteer Breakfast, September 3rd, and Open House, September 17th.

K-Kindness

New Berlin is a No Bullying Zone. Students in our classroom are encouraged and expected to treat all members of our class as well as others with kindness and respect. Hitting, fighting, name-calling, and making fun of others will not be allowed.

L-Lunch

Our lunch time is 10:55-11:25. The school will provide lunch and breakfast for the children who wish to purchase one. Breakfast is served from 8:00-8:30 everyday. The cost for lunch is $1.50 a day. The price of breakfast is $1.00. For convenience, you may deposit money to your child’s lunch account online at www.mylunchmoney.com . If you wish to pay by check, please make your checks payable to New Berlin Elementary. Your child is only allowed to charge a lunch for three days. After that they will receive an alternative lunch. Milk is available for students with lunchboxes for $.50.  Drinks in glass containers are not allowed in the lunchroom.

M-Music

Your child will go to either art, music, library, or PE everyday. We will make a note in your child’s agenda about which special area they will be attending. For your child’s safety please make sure that your child wears tennis shoes on the days we have PE.

N-Notes

Your child will receive an agenda on the first day of school. The pocket in the back is a great place to put your notes for us or you may write notes right on the page of the current date. If your child is going home a different way, please make sure to write a note. If we do not receive a note your child will be sent home their usual way.  Also, if you decide to switch your child to riding the bus please make sure to write a note giving permission, the bus number, and the name of your child’s the bus stop.  In the afternoon kindergartens have to be met at the bus stop by an adult.  If there is not an adult present at the bus stop your kindergarten will be brought back to New Berlin.

O-Open House

We will be having Open House September 17th. This will be a night we can come together and we will discuss the different things your child will be learning this year.

P-Parties

We will have two big parties during the school year. The first will be a Christmas party and the second is our end of the year party. We will also have a small Valentine snack.  We will be calling on volunteers to help us with these events. Also, if your child is celebrating his/her birthday you may bring in cupcakes or cookies for a birthday snack. Birthday snacks will be served at the end of the day, around 2:00. If you are planning on doing this for your child please let us know a few days before your child’s birthday.

Q-Questions

If at any time you have any questions please feel free to contact us. You can contact us at school between the hours of 7:50 and 4:00. We may not be able to come to the phone right away but we will call you back as soon as possible. You and your child are important to us.

R-Rest Time

We will only be having rest time for the first two weeks of school. Please do not bring in blankets and pillows. We will only rest for a short time period.

S-Snacks

There will be no organized classroom daily snack. However, if your child is in the afterschool extended day program, you must send a snack daily. Snacks will not be provided.

T-Toys

Children are asked NOT to bring toys from home. Toys are a distraction, and we do not want the toy to become lost or broken.

U-“U”

“U” play an important role in your child’s education. We would love to have you visit. However, if you stop in, we may put you to work. Don’t worry, it will be fun work. Please give us the first 2 or 3 weeks to get to know your child and for your child to learn our class routines and rituals before coming to visit. New Berlin's policy requires that all visitors check in at the office and wear a visitor’s badge.

V-Volunteers

If you choose to volunteer in the classroom, for field trips, or tutoring, please be aware that you will be required to attend a parent-volunteer orientation. You will not be allowed to go on a field trip without this clearance.

W – Walkers

X-Extra Clothes

It is very important that you send an extra set of clothes in case of a bathroom accident, messy spill or wet and muddy playgrounds. This way we do not have to bother you at work or home. These clothes will stay in your child’s backpack since we have no space at school to store them.

Y-Younger Siblings

It is in our students’ best interest to have our parent volunteers available without younger children as much as possible. This not only allows your full attention to be focused on the class, but also allows for some special time between you and your kindergartner. Thank you for making childcare arrangements for younger siblings.

Z-ZZZZZs

Make sure your child gets plenty of rest. A kindergarten classroom is a busy place and you will probably find your child exhausted at the end of the day. Setting and keeping a bedtime is a wonderful gift you can give to your child. It will help them to stay alert and ready to learn each day!

We are going to have an excellent year!
