includes information technology career research; operating systems and
software applications; electronic communications including e-mail and
Internet services; basic HTML, DHTML, and XML web commands and design; and
emerging technologies and Web page design.

on the following project:
Skill Builder 1 - Write a program in Scratch and "share" it on the Scratch
website.
Create a Scratch project with one Kung Fu or dancing character that can be
controlled by the arrow keys.
Left arrow = left move
Right arrow = right move
Up arrow = jump up or spin clockwise
Down arrow = duck a hit or spin counter-clockwise

1. Identified the role your robot will play in helping a human.
2. Task List for your robot
3. Generate a drawing representing what the robot and parts will look like.
Label the drawing indicating the choices you made for the characteristics
(refer to the online site to understand the choices in each category).
4. Summary Report: that will include descriptions for what it looks, sensing,
movement, manipulation, energy and for intelligence. Not all robots have to
have all six characteristics. For example, some robots don't need to
manipulate things, so they have no manipulating characteristics. Some robots
have more than one manifestation of a characteristic. For example, a robot may
be able to sense its environment using both a vision system and sonar.

-Discussion question 1:
List all the robots you know, whether from movies, television, literature,
toys, etc., and then think about why all these creatures are considered to be
robots. Think about how you can tell if something is a robot. Is it by looks,
behavior, or something else? How would you communicate with a robot? Would you
use speech, press button, type words, make gestures? Are these things
different from what you'd do if you were talking to a computer?
-Discussion question 2:
Why it has been difficult to build robots that replicate human
characteristics. Will it ever be possible to build a robot whose intelligence
will be close to that of a person?

been considerable debate concerning their effect on employment. For example,
some people argue that computers have replaced many workers and are,
therefore, a social evil. Others argue that the computer industry has
created many new high-paying jobs in the technology field. Have computers
had an overall good effect or bad effect on society. Explain your answer.
Your paper should be at least one paragraph but no more than a page.

HOMEWORK FOR 1/20/09: Write a description of what information technology is
and how it affects you on a day to day basis. Use any resource you choose
to define sources and how you use information technology to accomplish in
and out of school tasks.
HOMEWORK FOR 1/21/09: A taxonomy is used to group related words into
categories. The handout given was an example that you should use to complete
your Taxonomy. This will give you an idea of what your completed taxonomy
will look like.
In the wide top margin of the page, write "General Taxonomy of Information
Technology." Then write the letters A to Z on the left of the red margin
line, using one line for each letter. You may need to double or triple up
some letters such as J and K or X, Y, and Z in order to fit 26 letters on
the page. Begin independently by thinking of a word that belongs with the
topic. For Information Technology, a word might be Internet. Write Internet
next to the letter I. Set a timer for 5 or 10 minutes and include as many
words as you can think of that relate directly to IT. You may write more
than one word for each letter and they should not worry about finding a word
for every letter.
WARM-UP FOR 1/22/09: Explore the Tech Terms Computer Dictionary website
(http://www.techterms.com/) and find definitions of words you have in your
taxonomies. Jot down any of the definitions that you find interesting so
that you can share them with the class.
HOMEWORK FOR 1/22/09: Read the Student Resource 2.1, Reading: The Meaning of
Information Technology and Computer Literacy, and write about what you see
as the three most important points in the reading. Your paper should be at
least one paragraph but no more than a page.
