5/8	6. Study the pictures of spiral galaxies on page 619 and answer the
following two questions. 1) Based only on the photos, why can we conclude
that the Milky Way is a spiral galaxy? 2) How can we use the photos to
estimate the size of the galaxies as seen from Earth?

5/8	7. Research the size of the Milky Way Galaxy and the number of stars
it contains. Prepare two brief (and unique) demonstrations for your
classmates. The first: a way to demonstrate the size of the galaxy. The
second: a way to demonstrate the number of stars. 1/3 of your score will be
the demonstrations (5 points each) , 2/3 will be what you type and hand in
(10 points each).

5/8	8. Do research on ‘redshift’. Why is the concept of redshift /
blueshift important to our learning about the galaxy?

5/8	9. Select the link Turing Fork Diagram in Astronomy Extras. Write a
brief history of the Tuning Fork Diagram including Hubble’s misconceptions.
Lastly, predict where the Milky Way Galaxy would be on the diagram, then
search and find it. Name the site where you found the answer.

5/8	10. There are two video links in the Astronomy Extras page by Phil
Plait (the author of Bad Astronomy). Watch each video (3:45 & 4:11 in
length) and write a 5-7 sentence summary of each video.

Extra credit odd puzzle: Four cars approached a 4-way stop intersection from
four different directions at exactly the same time. All 4 cars entered the
intersection at the same time and exited the intersection safely and without
hitting each other. Without breaking any traffic laws in the process, how is
this possible? For double the points, give two possible solutions.
