Final Thesis- End Term

 

You have been assigned an element from the periodic table to write Term Paper 1. You must answer the following:

 

  1. List the name of the element and define the symbol that represents it; i.e., Lead is defined with Pb. What does it stand for and how did it get its name.
  2. Who was the principle discoverer(s) and in what year was it discovered. Discuss the background(s) of the people involved.
  3. Discuss how the atomic mass, atomic number, electron configuration and possible oxidation states were determined.
  4. Show how it reacts using the following synthesis reaction with Oxygen.
    1. X (Element) + O2 (gas) à  XnOm   where n and m equals the number of the individual atoms in the compound.
    2. Write the correct chemical name in words - (eg; U2O3 – Uranium (II) Oxide)
    3. Not to be used for noble gases
  5. How does it effect the human anatomy; i.e., poisonous or beneficial and how?
  6. How will its use or purification affect our environment?

 

 

The paper must be a minimum of 1000 words, double spaced and the references on a separate page using MLA formatting. There must be a minimum of three references to support your paper.

 Google and Wikipedia will not be acceptable references.

 

You will be assigned an element based on a random draw from a box containing elements numbered 1-89 excluding the Lanthanide and Actinide series. The paper will be submitted to Turnitin .com to test for plagiarism and will be corrected on site.

 

You must document your references as they will be verified using software dedicated for that purpose. The allowed sources are as follows:

  1. Internet - Questia
  2. Text Book
  3. An original source     
  4. Technical journal

 You must use at least three of the four choices.

The paper must be 1000 words long, double line spacing, and will include an introduction and conclusion. Additionally, you must have a citation page using MLA formatting. There are three sites that you can use for information on this:
