Welcome to Economics. The following is a guideline of the agenda and
activities we will follow for the Second Semester. From time to time there
will be changes to this outline, and I will keep you informed as this
happens.

01/12/09 Introduction to Economics Class. Course overview and general
discussion on how many events that take place in our world that make an
impact on the economy. Notes on different factors that might positively or
negatively influence the economy. Group activity on current events and how
they impact the economy. This involves each student selecting a newspaper
article, reading, summarizing and presenting the positive or negative impact
this news event might have on the economy.
01/14/09: Presention of Current Events Project. Class discussion
Chapter 1: Introduction to Economics: Scarcity, Factors of Production.
Group work create a business labeling the factors of production with
examples.
Homework: CNN Student News answer 10 questions for January 13 report. Due

2/2/09 Begin lecture and discussion on Chapter 2, section 1. Examples of
different types of Economic Systems. Discussion question and answers on the
Traditional, Command, and Market Economies. Notes on history of Capitalism.
Video on capitalism.
Wall Street Reading, questions due in class Wednesday 2/4/09.
Homework continue reading Chap 2, section 2 Also read p30-31 on Minimum
Wage.
2/4/09 Review of Economic Systems Wall Street Reading, questions due in
class. Discussion on Efficiency, Equity, Freedom and Security. Discuss
minimum wage, debate the pros and cons of raising the minimum wage.
Class Activity:
Students will present their information on the minimum wage. Debate
of the pros and cons of minimum wage. Notes of Fair Labor Standards. Discuss
social security and the rest of section 2 in Chapter 2.
2/6/09 Begin Ch 2, Sec 3: Discuss the topic of American Free Enterprise
covering the following topics Characteristics of Capitalism, Private
property rights profit motives and competition. In this there is also the
Role of the Government. We will discuss the Agency for Consumer Product
Safety and the FDA.
Assignment in class. look at www.cpsa.gov and choose one recalled product
and write short description about this.
Assignment: Research the Food and Drug Adminstration (FDA)
questions will be supplied.
One agency the government has created to protect consumer rights is the U.S.
Food and Drug Administration. Find out more about the U.S. Food and Drug
Administration. Read about the history of the FDA, then answer the following
questions:

(1.)Describe what the FDA does, and create a list of the products regulated
by the FDA, and (2.)Click on FDA for You, Consumers, Consumers health
information. write a five to seven sentence paragraph that summarizes the a
topic that you investigated on the website.

discussion. Each student will select a type of business organization and
