Welcome to Street Law. For this course we will be using the textbook STREET LAW; A course in
Practical Law.

Introduction to Street Law class, overview of class, class rules. Scavenger hunt, discuss
what is law, why do societies have laws. Look at the Bill of Rights, Constitution. Overview of
the Book.
Start on Chapter One, values and law. Play Ring Game, follow up with questions. Begin
reading chapter one and do the quiz in streetlaw website.
Case study on Shipwrecked Sailors. Break up into groups to start on Case Study outline with
information in the street law website.
----------------------------------------WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 1 (A WEEK)----------------------------
Complete analysis of Shipwrecked Sailors, and present in class. Analysis is to be turned in
for credit. Start on section on Human Rights. Review what the Declaration of Human Rights is.
Work on problem 1.4 then share group responses.
Continue on human rights section work on and complete problem 1.5. Share at end of period.

Introduce Apethetic Bystander. Work on Case Study on page 13 Apathetic Bystander, follow
questions with information
in website.
Present in class on second day of lesson. Discuss the fact that no law was broken, but the
action taken was wrong. This case was from the 1960's what would be different today?

Discuss kinds of laws with transparencies. Problem 1.7 verbal with a list of offenses and the
type of law civil or criminal. Homework to read the Bill of Rights and understnd judicial
review.
Constitution Day 9/17/08 Cover importance of Constitution - Law of the Land. What does this
mean. How has the document become the longest contnuing governing document in the History of the
world. Discuss problem 1.8 and the Bill of Rights and Judicial Review.

11/03 Start Chapter 7, Crime in America, look at crime statistics pages 74-80. Work on 7.1 very
serious, not serious crimes. 7.3 Crime statistics.
11/05 Weapons at school. Discuss what students know about school and guns. Pair up and create
a brochure concerning weapons in school. What are the causes and preventions. Turn brochure in
at end of class. Homework read pages 82-87 and do outline of this reading to turn into class on
Monday 9/10.

11/10 Present Guns in School Brochures. Discuss Guns and Crime, including Gangs and Crime.
Brady Bill gun legslation relating to violence prevention. Students will select an article, at
least two pages long, and write a 2-3 paragraph summary about the article. For article go to
cnn.com/crime. Print out article and turn in with the summary.
11/12 Crimes involvings substance abuse and drugs. Problem 7.9 and 7.10.
Homework read pages 95-99 Victims in crime and good samaritan laws. Do questions to 7.14,on Good
Samaritan laws. Also Report on a law passed to protect victims: Amber alert, Jessica Lunsford
law. How does the law you report on protect the victim.
11/14 Discussion on the topic of Victims of crime. Discussion of the duties that witnesses to
crimes have. Homework read Chapter 8 and define the vocabulry terms in blue. Bring in homework
for Mondays class.

study and make a judgement on the case.

4. Choose another cause from the ‘Understand the causes” tab, not necessarily related to
your case, and explain what it is about.
